American citizen killed during protest against settlements in West Bank
RAMALLAH, West Bank − A dual U.S.-Turkish citizen named Aysenur Ezgi Eygi tragically succumbed to her injuries after being shot in the head by Israeli soldiers during a demonstration against settlement expansion in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, as reported by the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
Both the U.S. State Department and Turkey’s Foreign Ministry have confirmed her death, with Turkey labeling it as a killing conducted by the Israeli government under Netanyahu’s administration.
The Israeli military announced they are investigating “reports of a foreign national being killed by gunfire in the area,” adding that they are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller issued a statement expressing sorrow over Eygi’s death and conveying condolences to her family and friends.
“We are urgently seeking more details regarding the circumstances surrounding her passing, and will provide updates as information becomes available,” he added, emphasizing the government’s commitment to the safety of American citizens.
Fouad Nafaa, director of the Rafidia Hospital in Nablus, informed Reuters that the victim was brought to the hospital with severe head trauma.
“We attempted to resuscitate her, but sadly, she was pronounced dead,” he stated.
WAFA indicated that this incident took place during a routine protest led by activists in Beita, a town near Nablus that has experienced persistent harassment from nationalist Jewish settlers.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry criticized Israel’s actions, claiming that they aim to intimidate those supporting the Palestinian community and engaging in peaceful protest against what they termed genocide. They asserted that Israel’s violent tactics will not succeed.
Increased violent acts by Israeli settlers towards Palestinian communities have heightened tensions among Israel’s Western allies, prompting reactions from countries like the United States, which has enacted sanctions against certain individuals.
Recently, approximately 100 settlers assaulted the village of Jit in northern West Bank, which resulted in international outcry and a promise from the Israeli government to swiftly investigate and take action against those responsible for the violence.
Palestinians and various human rights organizations routinely accuse Israeli forces of either allowing these attacks to occur or actively participating in them.
