Donald Trump, Megyn Kelly, that eye-catching speech and its significance
At Trump’s final Pennsylvania rally on Monday night, he and Megyn Kelly shared an embrace, after which she enthusiastically endorsed his presidential candidacy in a speech.
What?!
This statement might seem surprising to those who followed the 2016 election closely.
During a Republican primary debate back then, Kelly questioned Trump about his suitability for the presidency, prompting him to remark, “There was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever.” This led to a significant rift between them. Last year, however, she remarked that their previous “nonsense” was now “under the bridge,” as reported by the Associated Press.
In her speech on Monday, Kelly praised Trump’s views on immigration and transgender rights as key reasons to support him. “He was ridiculed by the Left for claiming he would be a defender of women,” she stated. “He truly will defend women, which is why I’m casting my vote for him.”
Some are interpreting this moment as a lesson in forgiveness—though those most excited about her change of heart may include the same individuals who previously criticized her.
The wide range of responses to her speech highlights the ongoing polarization in the country on Election Day. It also serves as a reminder that while forgiveness can be beneficial, it may lead to the alienation of others.
‘Lessons in Forgiveness’
“Beautiful! This really shows how far both of you have come in your journeys, and it makes the women of our nation proud,” one Instagram user commented. “Thank you for being such a brave voice… your speech tonight was amazing.” Another commenter added: “What a journey for you both! Let this be a unifying message for us all! Fantastic speech, Megyn!!”
Another person commented, “This is a remarkable image of two individuals who have looked past their differences and embraced forgiveness. We should all take a lesson from this. Love you both.”
However, others are puzzled by this turn of events, including feminists who supported Kelly after Trump’s past statements: “You’ve betrayed all those who stood by you, and many of them stood up for you. You are a disgrace,” one remarked on X.
“Hmmmm, do you not recall what he said or did to you in 2015?” another user questioned. This sentiment echoed among many who doubted whether Trump deserved Kelly’s forgiveness.
Understanding Forgiveness
People often seek reconciliation during tough times – but experts caution that one can come together despite differences without instantly mending a relationship.
“You can indeed forgive someone without the intention of rekindling a relationship with them or having them in your life,” stated T.M. Robinson-Mosley, a counseling psychologist, in an earlier interview with YSL News. This could represent such a pivotal moment for Kelly in a crucial election time.
However, forgiveness is not obligatory. “There’s this notion that we must forgive to move forward, and that it is expected,” Robinson-Mosley commented.
If holding onto a lack of forgiveness occupies too much mental space and breeds resentment, then it becomes problematic.
Perhaps Kelly felt compelled to take a stand, even if it risked alienating those who had previously supported her.
In her own words to her supporters, Kelly explained: “I put a lot of thought into this decision,” she stated on her SiriusXM show before joining Trump. “For the first time, I revealed to the audience who I’m voting for… I particularly hope women are hearing me. Wish me luck tonight.”
