The world’s most powerful passport has been determined: Here’s how the US measures up
The 2025 rankings for the strongest passport globally have been announced, and the United States does not hold the top position.
Singapore continues to hold the title of the world’s most powerful passport, enabling its citizens to visit 195 out of 227 destinations without needing a visa – an increase from last year’s count, according to the 2025 Henley Passport Index.
Previously, Singapore shared the top rank with countries like Japan, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. This joint recognition was unprecedented, with six countries holding the title simultaneously.
This year also marks the greatest disparity in mobility in the index’s 19-year history, with citizens of Singapore able to visit 169 more destinations than those from Afghanistan, which ranked last with only 26 visa-free destinations.
The Standing of the U.S. Passport
Compared to last year, the U.S. has slipped two spots, now tying with Estonia for the 9th position.
Americans can travel to 186 countries without a visa. Over the past ten years, the U.S. passport has dropped significantly in the rankings, having once ranked as the second most powerful passport in 2015.
In a statement, Annie Pforzheimer, a senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, remarked, “American political trends have become increasingly inward-focused and isolationist, even before a potential second presidency under Trump. If policies like tariffs and deportations remain the default approach, the U.S. may not only continue to drop in relative mobility rankings but could also decline in absolute terms.”
Interestingly, while U.S. citizens are falling in passport rankings, they represent the largest demographic pursuing alternative residency and citizenship, making up 21% of all investment migration applications received by Henley & Partners last year.
