Live Updates: Dodgers vs. Yankees World Series Game 1 Highlights Stanton’s Home Run
The 2024 World Series has kicked off, featuring a classic face-off between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers, two legendary baseball teams.
Having not appeared in the Fall Classic since 2009, the Yankees aim to boost their impressive total of 27 championships. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are making their fourth World Series appearance in just eight years, celebrating a victory during the shortened 2020 season.
This best-of-seven series showcases some of MLB’s biggest talents, potentially including 2024 MVP candidates Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani. The rosters feature six former MVP award winners: Judge, Ohtani, Giancarlo Stanton, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, and an injured Clayton Kershaw, alongside Yankees star Juan Soto, who is set to become a free agent after this series.
The opening game is taking place on Friday night at Dodger Stadium, with Game 2 slated for Saturday in Los Angeles, before the series transitions to Yankee Stadium for Games 3 to 5.
Stay tuned for real-time updates from Friday’s game:
Yankees Escape a Tough Spot in the Seventh
Gerrit Cole exited the game after allowing a leadoff single in the seventh inning, and Clay Holmes took over. Holmes quickly hit Max Muncy, but Enrique Hernandez advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Holmes managed to get Will Smith to pop out for the second out, before Tommy Kahnle was brought in to close the inning with a ground out from Gavin Lux.
Anthony Banda Gets Dodgers Out of a Tight Situation
Anthony Banda stepped in to finish the sixth inning after Jack Flaherty was taken out.
Banda threw 15 pitches in the inning, striking out Alex Verdugo with the bases loaded, halting the Dodgers’ potential rally.
The Yankees are leading the Dodgers 2-1 as the bottom of the sixth inning begins.
Giancarlo Stanton’s Home Run Puts Yankees Ahead 2-1
LOS ANGELES — The Yankees responded strongly in the top of the sixth.
Giancarlo Stanton smashed a two-run home run, giving New York a 2-1 advantage against the Dodgers.
Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts quickly decided to pull pitcher Jack Flaherty from the game. Flaherty gave up five hits and two earned runs while striking out six over 5⅓ innings.
Stanton has now homered in four consecutive games and was recently named ALCS MVP.
Dodgers Take Early Lead with Will Smith’s Sac Fly
The Dodgers got on the board first in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly by Will Smith. Enrique Hernandez made it home safely after sliding past catcher Austin Wells, thanks to a ruling by umpire Carlos Torres.
Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole gave up two hits and one earned run, and managed four strikeouts over five innings pitched.
Jack Flaherty Dominates Through Five Innings
LOS ANGELES — Jack Flaherty has had an excellent start, giving up only three hits and a walk while striking out five in the first five innings of Game 1.
In the top of the fifth, he struck out Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells to secure the first two outs.
Flaherty’s recent performances in the National League Championship Series have been a rollercoaster ride, with a strong outing in his last home game against the New York Mets, limiting them to only two hits and two walks while striking out six.
However, in his last road game, he struggled, giving up eight hits and eight earned runs in a mere three innings against the Mets, issuing four walks without any strikeouts.
Having been traded to the Dodgers at the deadline, Flaherty has personal ties to Southern California, where he led Harvard Westlake to a CIF-SS Championship at Dodger Stadium in 2013.

Despite battling an ankle injury through the postseason, Freddie Freeman hit a triple with two outs. Yet, Cole managed to get Teoscar Hernandez to line out, ending the inning.
With the score still tied at the end of the first inning, the game remains scoreless between the Dodgers and the Yankees.

Dodgers World Series Roster: Key Pitcher Injured
LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers will be without a significant member of their bullpen for the World Series.
The roster announced on Friday did not include reliever Evan Phillips, who had to cut short his appearance in the clinching Game 6 of the National League Championship Series due to injury concerns.
Brusdar Graterol, who was out for a month with a shoulder injury, takes Phillips’ place on the roster. Phillips’ absence is a notable loss for the Dodgers’ postseason bullpen setup.

Dodgers’ jersey patch pays tribute to Fernando Valenzuela
LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers placed a No. 34 patch on their uniforms for the World Series, honoring Valenzuela before Game 1 and throughout Dodger Stadium.
The entrance to the stadium has become a tribute to the late pitcher, adorned with candles, flowers, photos, and, naturally, the Mexican flag.
“We’re just going to keep his story alive and ensure his legacy continues,” remarked Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo, a former Dodger who played alongside Valenzuela on the Mexican national team.
While he won’t be physically there for the Dodgers vs. Yankees match on Friday night, many believe Valenzuela will be watching over his team.

- SCORE SUMMARY: Dodgers 13, Yankees 9
The game showcased a total of six home runs, three of which came in the first inning, as the Yankees initially took the lead with Giancarlo Stanton’s two-run homer off Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty.

Despite this, the Yankees maintained pressure and clawed back into the game. Aaron Judge hit a three-run homer in the sixth to narrow the deficit. Then, with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, Judge brought in two runs with a single, putting New York ahead 9-8.
The Dodgers rallied again in the bottom of the eighth against Yankees reliever Jake Cousins. Shohei Ohtani doubled to right with one out, stole third, and tied the game when Betts hit an RBI single.
After Betts stole second, Freeman hit a powerful 447-foot home run to right field, giving the Dodgers a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
