32 Takeaways from an Action-Packed NFL Week 5: Streaks Broken and Born

32 Insights from NFL Week 5: Streaks Break and Extend in a Thrilling Weekend

Here are the 32 takeaways from Week 5 of the 2024 NFL season:

0: Following the exhilarating 37-34 victory of the Jacksonville Jaguars over the short-handed Indianapolis Colts, no teams remain winless.

1: Quarterback Trevor Lawrence of the Jaguars secured his first win in ten matches, breaking his nine-game losing streak. This victory came just in time to celebrate his 25th birthday.

2: Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce made two notable catches, both over 45 yards, totaling 134 yards and a touchdown, connecting with backup QB Joe Flacco.

3: Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker achieved a career-high with three sacks, showcasing his ongoing improvement and aiming for a potential personal record of 17 sacks this season.

4(-0): The Minnesota Vikings improved their record to 4-0 in London by defeating the New York Jets 23-17, setting a new record for the best win rate in the NFL’s International Series.

5(-0): The Vikings boast the league’s top record, which the reigning champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, may match if they triumph against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night.

6: Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw three interceptions in a single game against Minnesota, including a pick-six and a final throw that sealed the loss.

6(0,000+): Rodgers has accumulated 60,148 passing yards during the regular season, becoming the ninth quarterback in NFL history to pass this milestone.

7: Interestingly, Rodgers may now be the second-best quarterback in the New York area, trailing Daniel Jones, who led the Giants to a victory over the Seahawks while missing star receiver Malik Nabers (concussion).

7a: Jones has committed only one turnover in his last four games, bringing the Giants to a 2-3 record, tying them with the Jets under differing expectations.

7b: Historically, teams that start 2-3 have about a 77.5% chance of missing the playoffs, although the expanded postseason format might offer a glimmer of hope.

8: Rams running back Kyren Williams has now scored in eight consecutive regular-season games, currently the longest active streak in the league.

9: Bills quarterback Josh Allen completed only 9 passes on 30 attempts during the 23-20 loss against the Texans, marking the lowest completion percentage of his career. His struggles culminated on the final drive, unsuccessful in three attempts, resulting in a costly punt that set up Houston’s game-winning field goal.

9a: In a thrilling match, Ravens QB Lamar Jackson and Bengals QB Joe Burrow combined for nine touchdown passes in Baltimore’s 41-38 overtime victory in Cincinnati.

10: Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase had 10 catches, scoring touchdowns on plays of 41 and 70 yards. His total of 193 receiving yards is currently the highest in a single game this season.

11: The Bengals’ punter Ryan Rehkow’s mishandled hold on a game-winning field goal attempt in overtime likely prevented the team from claiming a vital second win of the season, despite his impressive average of nearly 51 yards on five punts.

12: The Ravens have now rushed for 100 yards or more in 38 consecutive games, standing as the third-longest streak in NFL history, trailing only the 1974-77 Pittsburgh Steelers and the 2018-21 Ravens, both achieving 43 game streaks.

12a: Jackson and running back Derrick Henry have amassed a combined 935 rushing yards, the highest total ever for a quarterback-running back duo in the first five games of a season.

12b: Derrick Henry is making a strong case for the Hall of Fame, becoming just the fifth player to surpass 10,000 rushing yards and reach 100 touchdowns within their first 125 games.

13: Pittsburgh’s T.J. Watt, known for his pass-rushing prowess, achieved his 100th career sack in just 109 games, a remarkable feat only surpassed by Hall of Famer Reggie White, who did it in 96 games.

14: Washington Commanders rookie QB Jayden Daniels had a modest performance in his latest win over the Cleveland Browns, completing 14 of 25 passes after consistently exceeding 70% completion in his previous four NFL starts. Despite this, his season-leading 77.1% completion rate is still the second-best in history for rookie starters in the first five games, trailing only Drew Brees’ 2018 mark of 77.9%.

15: The Commanders, having won four straight, are the first team post-1970 merger to average 30 points in the first five games with a rookie quarterback, according to NFL Media.

16: Daniels joins the ranks of Joe Ferguson (1973 Bills) and Dak Prescott (2016 Cowboys) as one of the few rookie quarterbacks to achieve this notable feat.

QBs since the merger who have achieved a 4-1 record at the season’s beginning.

17: In relation to rookie quarterbacks, Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears has consistently raised his passer rating with each game since Week 2, achieving a remarkable 126.2 during Sunday’s impressive 36-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

18: The Bears have now claimed eight consecutive victories at Soldier Field, making it the longest home winning streak in the NFL.

19: Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos also steamrolled past the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, allowing the three rookie quarterbacks currently in the league to collectively achieve a 6-0 record over the last two weeks and 8-1 since Week 3.

19a: One can’t help but speculate on how long the New England Patriots will keep rookie Drake Maye benched after their loss to the depleted Miami Dolphins at home on Sunday.

20.92: The highest speed recorded (in miles per hour, according to Next Gen Stats) by Broncos CB Patrick Surtain II, which reached 20 mph during his pick-six that spanned 100 yards.

21.27: The peak speed (in mph, per NGS) recorded by Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray during his 50-yard touchdown run on Sunday, marking the fastest run by a quarterback in the NGS era (since 2016).

22.15: The top speed in mph, as recorded by NGS, for Jags rookie WR Brian Thomas Jr. on his 85-yard touchdown catch during Sunday’s win. This speed is the fastest logged this season and for the Jaguars in the past eight years.

23: Shouldn’t we just place Green Bay Packers S Xavier McKinney into an All-Pro slot already? He intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble in Sunday’s victory over the Los Angeles Rams. McKinney has registered at least one takeaway in every game this season, totaling six overall. His interception streak now stands at six consecutive games, including his last game with the Giants in 2023.

24: It seems San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk has finally emerged from his personal preseason as he recorded eight receptions for 147 yards on Sunday, which nearly doubled his total yardage (167) for the first four games following a long offseason holdout. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for the Niners to secure a win.

25: Part of the reason for this was Chad Ryland, who kicked three field goals, including the decisive 35-yarder with 97 seconds remaining, leading the Cardinals to victory. Both Arizona and San Francisco played without their regular kickers – with the Cardinals’ Matt Prater inactive due to a knee injury and the 49ers’ Jake Moody getting injured while making a tackle on Sunday.

25a: The Cardinals may have also enjoyed somewhat of a home-field advantage since temperatures in the 49ers’ Silicon Valley home peaked near 100 degrees.

26: The number of sacks taken by Browns QB Deshaun Watson, the highest in the league, as he was taken down seven times by the Commanders this Sunday. Watson has been sacked a total of 18 times over the last three games, including a career-high eight sacks in Week 3.

27: The Bills and Texans game was the only matchup in Week 5 featuring teams with winning records.

28: This discrepancy is partly due to the current parity in the league: 19 of the 32 teams are within a game of .500.

29: Seahawks S Rayshawn Jenkins recorded a fumble return for a touchdown that spanned 102 yards against the Giants. Alongside Surtain’s pick-six, this marked the first week in the league’s history that featured two defensive touchdowns covering at least 100 yards.

30: Former league MVP Matt Ryan was inducted into the Atlanta Falcons Ring of Honor on Thursday night, only to witness QB Kirk Cousins set a new single-game team record by passing for 509 yards in a thrilling 36-30 overtime win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

30a: Cousins became the first player in the Super Bowl era (since 1966) to throw for 250 yards both before and after halftime in the same game.

31: Additionally, former NFL pass rushers Jared Allen and Osi Umenyiora were the inaugural inductees into the NFL London Ring of Honour. While it may not seem exceptional, it’s definitely a neat acknowledgment.

32: This week brought many uniform updates, starting with the Falcons, who ought to return to their classic original designs, where they are currently 2-0 this season (compared to 1-2 in other uniforms).

32a: The Bengals donned four different types of tiger-striped pants in their five games, but they are 0-2 in their new orange ones. That could be a sign, gentlemen.

32b: The Broncos paid homage to their first Super Bowl team – the 1977 Orange Crush – and did a great job of it this Sunday. Personally, I wouldn’t mind a permanent change in this direction.

32c: The Texans made their debut with one of two new alternate uniforms for 2024 on Sunday. While the design was somewhat unremarkable, it was appreciated by Houstonians who have long waited for some variety (and are looking forward to seeing the other designs on the field).

32d: Lastly, coming back to the Jaguars – their uniforms are now retro, and the results speak for themselves.
