Grammy Winners for Best New Artist Over the Years: Complete List Ahead of 2025 Ceremony

Since its inception in 1959, the Grammy Awards have celebrated exceptional achievements in the music world. Among the most prestigious honors are the “big four” categories: album of the year, song of the year, record of the year, and best new artist.

The best new artist award first appeared at the second Grammy Awards. Since then, it has helped launch many artists into the spotlight.

Interestingly, nominees for this award do not necessarily have to be brand new to the music industry. The Recording Academy defines a “new artist” as one who establishes their persona as a performer during the eligibility window. In other words, even artists with extensive discographies can be nominated if they have recently gained popularity.

The best new artist award has not been presented twice: once in 1967 and again in 1990. The latter instance involved Milli Vanilli, who initially received the award but had it taken back when it was revealed that they did not sing on their album.

Let’s explore all the past winners of the best new artist Grammy Award and see who is nominated leading up to this year’s 67th annual ceremony on February 2.
