Alec Baldwin’s movie ‘Rust’ to premiere three years after the on-set tragedy

The troubled production of Alec Baldwin’s film “Rust” is finally making its debut, three years after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins lost her life while filming.

The movie, which resumed filming last year following the incident, is scheduled to premiere at the Energa Camerimage International Film Festival in Poland next month. After the screening, there will be a panel discussion featuring director Joel Souza, cinematographer Bianca Cline, and Hutchins’ mentor Stephen Lighthill.

“During the panel that follows ‘Rust,’ the filmmakers will delve into the circumstances surrounding the film, sharing their experiences of continuing production after Halyna’s passing,” the festival announced on Thursday. “Preserving Hutchins’ artistic vision was a significant challenge for the entire crew, and the filmmakers felt it was essential to honor her work.”

This festival, focused on cinematography, stated that the discussion will also cover Hutchins’ “distinctive visual style,” the contributions of women in cinematography, and the importance of safety on sets.

<p”Festival director Marek Zydowicz called the screening and discussion a “unique chance to honor” Hutchins’ memory.

Hutchins tragically died on the set of “Rust” in October 2021 when Baldwin’s gun accidentally discharged, resulting in her death and injuring Souza. Baldwin faced involuntary manslaughter charges, but the case was dismissed in July due to claims that evidence was withheld by prosecutors.

A jury found the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, guilty of involuntary manslaughter, resulting in an 18-month prison sentence.

In October 2022, it was revealed that filming for “Rust” would continue after Baldwin and the production company settled a lawsuit filed by Hutchins’ family. Matthew Hutchins, her husband, is now an executive producer of the film.

“I’m thankful that the producers and the entertainment industry have come together to celebrate Halyna’s final work,” Hutchins expressed in a statement shared with YSL News at that time.

By May 2023, Baldwin confirmed that filming had concluded. “It felt fantastic to shave off that beard…” he shared on Instagram.

“Rust” tells the story of a 13-year-old boy “who must survive and protect his younger brother after their parents die, and goes on the run with his estranged grandfather after he faces execution for accidentally killing a local rancher,” according to the festival’s synopsis.
