Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu wins Olympic bronze amid Jordan Chiles dispute
On Friday, Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu received her Olympic bronze medal for the floor exercise, while addressing Jordan Chiles amidst a scoring dispute that might strip Chiles of her originally awarded medal.
The official medal presentation in Bucharest occurred after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) permitted Romanian officials to conduct the ceremony. Bărbosu expressed support for Chiles and fellow teammate Sabrina Voinea during the event.
“I can’t stop thinking about Sabrina and Jordan right now,” Bărbosu remarked in Romanian. “This is a tough situation for us, filled with uncertainty and strong emotions. I hope everyone realizes we did nothing wrong at the Olympics and that the Olympic spirit outweighs any misunderstandings among the officials.”
“I want to believe that one day, all three of us will hold a bronze medal together,” she continued.
Bărbosu and Voinea achieved identical scores for their performances, but Bărbosu triumphed in the tiebreaker thanks to a higher execution score.
Initially, Chiles earned the bronze medal in Paris, ahead of both Romanians after her coach submitted an appeal that raised her difficulty score. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport later reversed this appeal due to a claimed timing error, which resulted in Chiles dropping to fifth place, trailing the Romanian gymnasts. Officials from the U.S. dispute this alleged timing issue.
Bărbosu received her medal from IOC member Octavian Morariu and Mihai Covaliu, president of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee. Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu was present as well.
“I didn’t realize how heavy this medal would be,” Bărbosu shared with the audience. “I’m thrilled to receive this medal and aspire to continue representing Romania at the highest level.”
Chiles voiced her thoughts on the situation on Thursday, stating via social media that the recent ruling “seems unfair” and that she has faced “racially motivated attacks” online.
“I will tackle this challenge as I have with others — and make every effort to ensure justice is served,” Chiles stated. “I trust that by the end of this process, the authorities will do the right thing.”
