Angela Alsobrooks Makes History as Maryland’s First Black U.S. Senator

Maryland has elected Angela Alsobrooks, making her the first Black U.S. senator from the state

Angela Alsobrooks won a congressional seat in Maryland on Tuesday, marking her as the first Black individual elected to represent the state in the U.S. Senate.

Alsobrooks, who is currently the executive of Prince George’s County, faced off against Larry Hogan, the Republican candidate and former two-term governor of the state. They competed for the seat of retiring Senator Ben Cardin, a Democrat who chose not to run for another term after three successful ones.

The race was influenced by the ongoing presidential campaigns, with Hogan asserting his independence from the Republican nominee, Donald Trump, while Alsobrooks aligned herself with Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, focusing on her strong advocacy for abortion rights.

Maryland voters also encountered an amendment regarding abortion rights on their ballot, part of a wider context where voters in ten states nationwide are addressing reproductive rights.
