Biden and Harris Express Outrage Over American Citizen’s Death in West Bank Incident

Biden and Harris respond to the fatal shooting of American by Israeli forces in West Bank

On Wednesday, President Joe Biden expressed his shock over the death of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a dual citizen of the U.S. and Turkey, who was killed by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank just five days after her tragic death.

“I am both outraged and heartbroken by Aysenur Eygi’s death,” Biden stated. “The circumstances surrounding her shooting are absolutely unacceptable.”

Eygi, aged 26, was participating in a demonstration against the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank when she was shot in the head by Israeli troops and succumbed to her injuries on Friday. An Israeli investigation released on Tuesday indicated that the troops may have “indirectly and unintentionally” caused her death.

Her family criticized Biden’s response, characterizing his statement that her death was “an accident” as reliant solely on the Israeli military’s account.

“This statement is not only callous and misleading, but it also shows complicity in the Israeli military’s intentions to seize Palestinian territories and downplay the murder of an American,” the Eygi family declared.

They mentioned that they have yet to receive communication from Biden or Harris.

“Let us be clear: an American citizen has been killed by a foreign military in a targeted attack,” they asserted in their statement. “It is vital for President Biden and Vice President Harris to engage directly with the family and to mandate an independent and transparent inquiry into Aysenur’s killing, as she was a peace activist.”

Vice President Kamala Harris also issued a statement on Wednesday, describing Eygi’s death as “a heartbreaking tragedy that should never have occurred.”

“Doug and I will keep her loved ones and family in our thoughts,” Harris said. “No one ought to be harmed for engaging in a peaceful protest. The shooting that resulted in her death is intolerable and raises serious concerns regarding the actions of IDF personnel in the West Bank.”

Harris indicated that the administration will urge the Israeli authorities for clarity and access to the investigation.

“Israel needs to take further steps to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future,” she remarked.

Biden and Vice President Harris faced backlash from the Uncommitted National Movement, a progressive group advocating against U.S. military support for Israel, for expressing prompt outrage over the deaths of Americans abducted by Hamas, yet delaying their response regarding Eygi’s death.

Earlier this month, Biden and Harris had conversations with the parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli-American who was recently killed after being captured by Hamas in Gaza.

In his statement on Wednesday, Biden mentioned that Israel “recognized its accountability” for Eygi’s death, noting that their preliminary investigation suggested it was due to a “tragic mistake stemming from an unnecessary confrontation.” He confirmed that the administration has full access to the initial investigation and anticipates ongoing access as it progresses.

“There must be complete accountability. Israel needs to do more to ensure events like this are not repeated,” Biden stated.

On Tuesday evening, Biden briefly commented on the preliminary outcomes of Israel’s investigation while addressing reporters, referring to the shooting as an apparent “accident, noting it may have ricocheted off the ground and inadvertently hit her.”

As violence continues in the West Bank, Biden is advocating for its cessation.

“Violent militant settlers are displacing Palestinians from their homes. Palestinian extremists are launching car bombs targeting civilians,” Biden stated. “I will persist in endorsing policies that hold all extremists—Israeli and Palestinian—responsible for fueling violence and obstructing peace.”
