Billie Lourd Remembers Her Mother Carrie Fisher on What Would Have Been Her 60th Birthday: ‘It’s Just Too Young’

Billie Lourd Opens Up About Her Loss on Carrie Fisher’s Birthday: ’60 Is Just Too Young’

On what would have been her mother Carrie Fisher’s 68th birthday, Billie Lourd is expressing her sorrow over her mother’s passing.

The 32-year-old star of “Scream Queens” took to Instagram on Monday to share her thoughts, stating that while she usually tries to honor her mom on October 21st, “today, I truly wanted to celebrate her with her.”

“Some years, my grief allows me to feel her love, other times it makes me upset, and some years I feel numb. But today, when I woke up, I just felt a wave of sadness,” she wrote. “In my sadness, I found myself googling ‘average life expectancy for women’ (what a fun search, Billie!!! I swear my other searches are a bit more entertaining!) and found out it’s 80.2 years.”

“My mom passed away at 60,” Lourd added. “Sixty is far too young to die. I also looked up overdose death statistics (yet another thrilling search!!), and it turns out it’s over 100,000 people each year.”

Fisher, widely recognized for her portrayal of Princess Leia in the “Star Wars” series, passed away on December 27, 2016, at the age of 60 after experiencing a medical crisis during a flight.

An autopsy revealed that the actress had traces of “cocaine, methadone, ethanol, and opiates” in her system at the time of her death. Lourd commented then, “My mom struggled with addiction and mental health issues throughout her life. Ultimately, it took her life.”

Fisher spoke candidly about her battles with addiction during her lifetime. In her Instagram post, Lourd expressed that she “did everything possible to help my mom find sobriety, but, unfortunately, my mom could never break free from her addiction.”

“While she lived, my mom always shared the highs and lows of her journey to inspire others to overcome their addictions,” Lourd stated. “Being transparent about such struggles is essential for an addict and for everyone affected by it. Sending love to all who have lost someone due to addiction. You are not alone.”

Lourd appeared alongside her mother as Lieutenant Connix in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015) and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” (2017), reprising the role in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” (2019). Beyond the “Star Wars” saga, Lourd has also starred in series like “Scream Queens” and films like “Booksmart” and “Ticket to Paradise.”

Since her mother’s passing, Lourd has embraced motherhood, welcoming two children with her husband Austen Rydell.

In December, on the seventh anniversary of her mother’s death, Lourd shared on Instagram, “I miss her every day, but the saying is true — she is always with me — she makes my happy moments even brighter. As I tell my son, she resides among the stars — and she certainly adds sparkle to my life.”
