Winners and losers from ‘Sunday Night Football’: Bills freeze 49ers in Buffalo
It was a cold December football evening in Buffalo.
Amid freezing temperatures and snowy conditions, the Buffalo Bills (10-2) triumphed over the San Francisco 49ers (5-7) with a score of 35-10 at Highmark Stadium.
The 49ers initially led 3-0 in the first quarter, but the Bills quickly took control of the game with 21 consecutive points in the first half, showcasing strong performances from Josh Allen, James Cook, and the rest of the team.
The 49ers’ lackluster performance, hampered by injuries, adds to the notion that teams from the West Coast struggle in snowy weather.
Here’s a look at who stood out and who fell short during Sunday night’s matchup between the 49ers and the Bills:
WINNERS
Buffalo Bills
With this victory, the Bills secured their fifth consecutive AFC East title, giving them an early holiday gift as they kicked off December.
Josh Allen
Allen, a lifelong 49ers fan from Firebaugh, California, enjoyed the snowy game against his childhood favorite team.
He executed a lateral pass to wide receiver Amari Cooper and sprinted around the left end for a 7-yard touchdown, embodying the essence of backyard football in snowy conditions. He was recognized for both a touchdown pass and reception.
He exited the game in the fourth quarter with the team in control.
For the night, Allen completed 13 of his 17 passes for 148 yards and threw two touchdown passes, adding 18 yards rushing with one rushing touchdown.
James Cook
Cook shined with 100 rushing yards and one touchdown on just nine carries during the first half.
His standout moment was a 65-yard touchdown run, marking the longest rushing touchdown for a Bills player since 2016.
In total, Cook made 107 rushing yards, scored one touchdown, and added 13 receiving yards.
Bills offense
The Bills offense has now scored at least 30 points in six straight games, showing that even heavy snow couldn’t stop their scoring prowess.
Bills fans
Bills fans actively participated in clearing snow from Highmark Stadium.
Numerous fans turned up to clear out approximately two feet of snow from the stadium.
The Bills provided fans aged 18 and older $20 per hour, along with food and hot drinks, for their assistance in snow removal at the stadium.
LOSERS
49ers injuries
The 49ers have struggled with injuries throughout the season. In the second quarter, running back Christian McCaffrey suffered a knee injury, which ruled him out.
Additionally, offensive tackle Trent Williams, defensive end Nick Bosa, and cornerback Deommodore Lenoir were unavailable due to injuries on Sunday.
At the start of Week 13, the 49ers had 10 players on injured reserve.
49ers losing streak
The 49ers have now lost three consecutive games and find themselves in last place in the NFC West— a drastic decline for a team that has reached the NFC title game three years in a row.
Last season, they experienced a three-game losing streak but bounced back to win seven of their final nine regular-season games, gaining momentum for the 2023 playoffs.
To make a playoff push this year, they will need a strong comeback; currently, the 49ers (5-7) are two games behind the NFC West-leading Seattle Seahawks (7-5).
49ers’ red zone offense
San Francisco struggled in the red zone, converting only 1 out of 3 attempts.
Fullback Kyle Juszczyk lost a fumble inside Buffalo’s 5-yard line while the 49ers were poised to score.
Overall, it was a problematic performance for the entire 49ers offense, as they lost possession three times via fumbles and converted only 3 of 10 on third downs.
Pass catchers
According to NFL Next Gen Stats, the first half featured the slowest average maximum route speed at just 11.8 mph.
