Al Roker Celebrates 70th Birthday, Gets Wisdom from Oprah Winfrey

Al Roker is turning 70 on Tuesday and receiving heartfelt advice about this milestone from a longtime friend: Oprah Winfrey.

In a recorded conversation for the “Today” show, the famous TV personalities discussed the excitement of reaching 70 while enjoying a tequila-Aperol-grapefruit drink at Roker’s residence in New York.

“I was excited to reach 70,” Winfrey, who is also celebrating this significant age, shared with Roker. “I embrace every decade. I remember as a young girl believing I might never see my 60s or 70s.”

She added, “Knowing that time is limited gives me a peaceful feeling. It’s an impetus for me to live fully and intensely.”

Winfrey reminisced about her childhood in Milwaukee, saying she “might not have survived” if she had remained in the conditions she faced while growing up in poverty with her late mother, Vernita Lee.

The two also shared their health challenges and expressed gratitude for reaching 70. Winfrey remarked to Roker, “It’s incredible that your heart has been beating for you for 69 years, just getting you ready for this milestone. It’s been right on schedule, just for you.”

Last January, Roker made his return to “Today” after taking a break due to health issues, while earlier this summer, Winfrey had to miss an interview due to gastroenteritis.

“There’s a realization that time is limited, and I’m at peace with that,” Winfrey told Roker. “It drives me to live a fulfilling and vigorous life.”

The duo discussed the positive aspects of aging, with Roker noting that “age sharpens your true self.”

“I’ve grown into a version of myself that is wiser, stronger, and more vibrant and aware than ever before,” Winfrey expressed, to which Roker humorously responded, “Seventy is just another number, no need to fret about it!”
