Coco Gauff powers through a small challenge to advance in Australian Open
American tennis player Coco Gauff faced a surprising challenge Wednesday as she advanced to the third round of the Australian Open.
Leading by a set and looking strong against Great Britain’s Jodie Burrage, Gauff suddenly had trouble maintaining her serve. Burrage, ranked 85th, took advantage by breaking Gauff’s serve twice and even got an opportunity to serve for the set.
However, the pressure was too great, and a double-fault on her serve allowed Gauff to regain momentum, leading the tournament’s No. 3 seed to secure the match with a score of 6-3, 7-5.
“It was just one of those things where I needed to elevate my game against her,” Gauff remarked to reporters after the match.
Having won the U.S. Open in 2023, Gauff’s next opponent in Melbourne will be Canadian Leylah Fernandez. They recently trained together, with Gauff having previously defeated Fernandez 6-3, 6-2 in their first major matchup during the United Cup.
“We’ll find out in two days whether the practice makes a difference,” she said. “Each match tells a different story, so anything can happen.”
