Colin Jost shares foot injury update after leaving Olympics correspondent role
Despite what some might think, Colin Jost still has his foot intact.
The “Weekend Update” co-host from “Saturday Night Live” posted a humorous video on Instagram on Sunday, following his unexpected departure from his role at NBC covering the surfing events of the 2024 Olympics in Tahiti. Jost suffered a foot injury from a coral reef that led to a severe infection, prompting him to leave the island in French Polynesia before the surfing competitions ended.
In a video shot in Malta, Jost reassured fans that he was okay, although he kept his injured foot hidden inside a sneaker.
“‘Dude, are you OK?’ That’s the most common message I’ve received in the last couple of days, usually followed by, ‘Heard your foot fell off,’” Jost, 42, remarked in the video while wearing a blazer and shorts and holding a microphone for his correspondent role.
“Actually, I’m perfectly fine, and despite what the media might want you to think, I wasn’t ‘sent home’ from the Olympics,” he continued. “NBC took one look at my foot, labeled me legally untouchable, and banished me here, to Malta.”
Jost mentioned that while Malta might not be hosting many Olympians this year, it does feature a casino where he has spent “the hundreds of dollars I earned as a surfing correspondent.”
“But the actual reason I’m in Malta is because it experienced 10 separate bubonic plague outbreaks,” he joked, “so they figured I would blend right in.”
Following Jost’s exit from Tahiti, Australian meteorologist Luke Bradnam stepped in to cover the remaining surfing competitions. NBC confirmed that Jost’s departure came after an extended stay.
“Colin stayed longer than originally intended,” NBC clarified. “The competition went on longer due to the weather. He enjoyed his time, and everyone was pleased with his reports from Tahiti.”
The “SNL” star and husband of Scarlett Johansson shared images on Instagram showing his foot injury that he incurred on a coral reef while covering the Olympics. The injury turned into a staph infection shortly after.
“I’ve been visiting the medical tent quite frequently. It feels strange to be in the tent more than the athletes themselves,” he later told NBC Sports.
“By now, the medical staff knows my name, they are quite familiar with my badge ID, they know I’m allergic to penicillin,” he added. “They’ve started saying, ‘We need to see you every day.’ At first, I thought, ‘Wow, I appreciate that, guys!’ But they clarified, ‘No, it’s because the infection hasn’t improved yet.’
Jost concluded his “foot update” video by expressing gratitude to the people of Tahiti for their kindness and for “only occasionally looking at my foot and mumbling ‘Chupacabra!'”
In spite of his injury, Jost has a busy calendar ahead, with “SNL” set to return in the fall and his new role as host of a “Jeopardy!” spin-off called “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” that will be featured on Amazon Prime Video.
This collaboration with Sony Pictures Television will provide a new twist to the classic quiz show’s “answer-and-question” structure, blending the academic rigor of “Jeopardy!” with the thrill and unpredictability of pop culture, according to a previous announcement from Amazon.
