BOULDER, Colo. – Under the leadership of head coach Deion Sanders, the Colorado football team has again kicked off the season with a 3-1 record. This time, it was thanks to a remarkable performance by Sanders’ quarterback son, Shedeur, who led the team to a thrilling 38-31 overtime victory at home against Baylor.
The dramatic win was clinched when the Buffaloes managed to tie the game 31-31 with a stunning 43-yard touchdown pass just as time expired. Shedeur Sanders rolled out to the left and lofted the ball toward the corner of the end zone, where receiver LaJohntay Wester made a crucial catch in the rain, perfectly securing the ball with both hands and elbows outstretched.
This incredible catch kept the Buffs’ hopes alive.
In overtime, Shedeur guided the team on a 25-yard drive in just seven plays, finishing with a 1-yard touchdown run by freshman running back Micah Welch.
Baylor had the opportunity to respond but their running back, Dominic Richardson, fumbled on his leap for a touchdown during the final play.
The crowd erupted in joy as Colorado fans flooded the field to celebrate the homecoming victory at Folsom Field. Shedeur Sanders completed 25 of 41 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns, while Travis Hunter, who shines in both offense and defense, caught seven passes for 130 yards.
First half highlighted by major plays
The latter touchdown came on a crucial fourth-and-1 play, with Robertson keeping the ball and running for the score.
However, the Buffs responded with a major play of their own just before halftime, narrowing Baylor’s lead to 24-17 with only 50 seconds left. After dodging a sack, Sanders tossed the ball toward the right side, where receiver Omarion Miller made a catch and appeared to be on the verge of being tackled at around the Baylor 35-yard line.
Yet, Miller broke free and sprinted for a remarkable 58-yard touchdown. Video replays suggested he could have been down at the 35 (his left leg was close to touching the ground), but referees ruled it a touchdown, giving the Buffs renewed energy at halftime.
Travis Hunter propels Colorado forward
Colorado tied the game 24-24 with just a minute left in the third quarter, capping an 80-yard touchdown drive that featured impressive catches by Hunter—one for 46 yards and another for 31 yards on a critical third-and-15 situation. The latter play brought them to Baylor’s 8-yard line, leading to a 2-yard touchdown run by Welch just two plays later.
By the end of the third quarter, Hunter had tallied five catches for 122 yards, marking his fifth consecutive game with over 100 yards receiving, a record he set last week.
Baylor quickly retaliated to regain a 31-24 lead.
The Bears found the end zone again with 5:43 left in the fourth quarter thanks to a beautiful pass from Robertson to receiver Hal Presley. Presley snagged the ball with one hand in the left corner of the end zone, completing a 24-yard touchdown pass after an impressive 61-yard drive in just eight plays.
The Baylor defense then sacked Sanders twice on the following series, forcing the Buffs to punt from deep in their own territory.
