Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp to miss significant time due to ankle injury
Cooper Kupp will be sidelined for an extended period, leaving the Los Angeles Rams in a challenging position.
On Monday, Rams head coach Sean McVay revealed that Kupp is expected to be out for “a good amount of time” due to a left ankle sprain he suffered during the Rams’ heavy defeat (41-10) against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2.
In that game, Kupp, safety John Johnson (shoulder), and guard Jonah Jackson (shoulder) all faced injuries. McVay pointed out that there is a chance all three players could be placed on injured reserve.
“We’ve encountered some unfortunate situations very early in the season, which I haven’t faced before,” McVay mentioned. “This is something different.”
Kupp suffered his injury while being tackled by Cardinals players Jalen Thompson and Starling Thomas late in the first half after making his fourth catch. He did not return for the second half due to the ankle issue.
This marks the third season in a row that Kupp has faced injuries to his lower body. He previously battled an ankle injury in 2022 and dealt with a persistent hamstring issue last year.
Kupp’s absence poses another significant setback for a Rams receiving group that is already weakened, as the team had previously placed wide receiver Puka Nacua on injured reserve following a knee injury sustained in their Week 1 loss to the Detroit Lions.
Kupp and Nacua represent the Rams’ top two receiving threats, both of whom are sidelined less than two weeks into the regular season.
Currently, the Rams are 0-2 for the first time under McVay and are experiencing their poorest start since 2011. They will face the San Francisco 49ers at home in Week 3.
“We must confront the reality of the situation. It’s tough on the teammates, but we need to focus on preparing effectively. It’s essential to work on building a rhythm and connection with the available players. We hope to stay healthy and continue improving the quality of our game,” McVay stated. “We are capable of playing at a much higher level on both sides of the ball.”
