David Montgomery’s Return: Injury Update Ahead of the Divisional Round
The Detroit Lions had an exceptional regular season, shattering franchise records with 15 victories and scoring 564 points. They clinched the NFC North title for the second year in a row and secured the top seed in the NFC.
Detroit led the NFL in scoring during the regular season, with starting running back David Montgomery playing a key role in their offensive success. Unfortunately, the Lions lost multiple players, including Montgomery, during their Week 15 game against the Buffalo Bills.
Montgomery sustained a knee injury in that match, and the following day, it was confirmed that he had torn the MCL in his right knee.
As a result, Montgomery missed the remainder of the regular season, prompting the Lions to prepare for the playoffs without him. However, he seems to be making progress toward returning for the divisional round, where the Lions will face the Washington Commanders.

Injury Update on David Montgomery
Just over a month after it was thought that Montgomery would be sidelined for the season, Lions coach Dan Campbell announced on Monday that he anticipates the running back will play in Saturday’s playoff opener against the Washington Commanders.
“He’s a vital player here; he sets the tone,” Campbell commented. “We’ll definitely have a role for him in this game, so we’re excited to have him back.”
Initially, Campbell indicated that Montgomery would need surgery that would end his season, but after consulting with several specialists, Montgomery chose to focus on rehabilitation instead. This decision has put him on track to potentially contribute during the playoffs.
Montgomery wrapped up the regular season with 775 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns from 185 carries, plus 341 receiving yards, marking the sixth consecutive season of over 1,000 yards from scrimmage to begin his NFL career.
The Lions are set to host the Commanders, who allowed the most yards before contact per carry in the league at 2.02, ranking third in average yards per rush and having the eighth-highest rate of explosive runs during the regular season.
