Deion Sanders comments on objects thrown at his team following Colorado’s victory over Texas Tech
During Saturday’s game at Texas Tech, objects were thrown onto the field.
Items included water bottles, tortillas, a vape, and even a beer bottle.
Much of this litter landed near the Colorado Buffaloes’ sideline as they claimed a 41-27 victory over Tech, marking another important triumph for this dynamic college football team. With their record now at 7-2, the Buffaloes are in a strong position to compete for the Big 12 Conference title.
“They were throwing everything but my mama at me,” joked Colorado coach Deion Sanders after the match.
Sanders took the incident lightly, reflecting on his experience in professional sports where fans have been known to throw batteries at players. He acknowledged that Texas Tech fans throwing tortillas is a long-standing tradition at Lubbock games.
“But when they start tossing water bottles and other objects, that’s when you need to alert the officials and say, `Okay, tortillas are one thing, but water bottles are going too far,’” Sanders remarked. “That’s a bit out of control.”
Texas Tech’s coach called it ‘over the line’
In the early fourth quarter, Tech’s coach Joey McGuire took a moment to address the crowd of 60,229.
“Stop throwing objects on the field!” McGuire urged the fans.
He later discussed some of the items that were retrieved from the field.
“A vape, a water bottle, and a beer bottle were brought to me,” McGuire reported. “Tortillas are fine, but we were fortunate not to receive a 15-yard penalty for the other things.”
He expressed admiration for Tech fans but added, “That crosses the line.”
Despite this tumult, Colorado embraced the hostile environment. This victory marked their fourth consecutive win on the road and positioned them strongly for a shot at a place in the new 12-team College Football Playoff.
How Colorado can control its future
If they secure wins in their last three regular season matches against Utah, Kansas, and Oklahoma State, the Buffaloes will advance to the Big 12 Championship game on December 7 in Arlington, Texas. Success there could propel them into the 12-team playoff, just two years after Coach Sanders was brought in to revitalize a Colorado team that finished a dismal 1-11 in 2022.
Heading into Saturday’s game, the Buffaloes shared second place in the conference standings with Iowa State, each with a 4-1 record. After Iowa State’s loss to Kansas, the Buffaloes now have a clear path to the Big 12 Championship if they win their upcoming games. BYU was at the top of the standings with a 5-0 record going into the day.
“We don’t alter our approach based on the stakes,” Coach Deion Sanders said about taking possession of second place. “You in the media might change how you report, but we stay focused on our plan.”
Shedeur Sanders signed a tortilla
Quarterback Shedeur Sanders mentioned post-game that he even signed a tortilla.
“I had to do it,” he explained. “They kept throwing them my way.”
Shedeur was pivotal in breaking a 13-0 deficit early in the game, completing 30 out of 43 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns. Despite the unruly crowd, he took time for fan selfies after the game.
“They were thrilled to see us,” Shedeur Sanders shared. “This may be our last time interacting with a lot of these college and young fans, so I want to make the most of it, understanding it’s game by game and always showing appreciation to the fans because they might not have another chance to see us.”
Travis Hunter boosts his Heisman credentials
Hunter, who plays both wide receiver and cornerback, had nine receptions for 99 yards and scored a 24-yard touchdown. He also made an important block on Colorado’s first touchdown. Notably, he nearly made an incredible interception on defense, but it was called back due to an offsides penalty in the second quarter.
He reportedly played over 160 plays in the game, setting a new Colorado record, pending official confirmation next week. Initial data showed he was on the field for 86 out of 87 plays on defense, all 70 on offense, and at least six on special teams, totaling roughly 156 plays from scrimmage and about 162 if special teams are included. His previous record was 149 plays from scrimmage and 160 total plays.
Next week, Colorado will host Utah in a Big Noon matchup on Fox.
Will the Buffaloes be able to maintain their momentum at home after such a strong showing on the road?
With two of their next three regular-season games at home, their only road game is against Kansas on November 23.
“If we step into the stadium and they aren’t hostile towards us, it doesn’t feel right,” stated Colorado safety Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig. “We’re accustomed to it.”
