‘Maybe it’s divine intervention:’ Trump shares his belief on surviving assassination attempts
WASHINGTON – On Monday, former President Donald Trump attributed both political and spiritual reasons to his survival of two assassination attempts in a span of just two months.
During an interview on X Spaces, Trump criticized Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden’s “rhetoric,” suggesting that perhaps a higher power has a role to play: “Maybe it’s God’s plan for me to be president to rescue this nation; who can say?”
Trump talked about the assassination attempts while promoting a new cryptocurrency project involving his two eldest sons and mentioned the recent arrest of an individual who brought a rifle onto his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. He also recalled the incident from July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed his ear.
“That was truly a wild day,” Trump stated. “And just yesterday, we had another event.”
He also noted that Biden reached out to him concerning the recent event and remarked that “he was very courteous.”
The interview on X Spaces marked a return to political discourse for Trump following his expressions of gratitude towards law enforcement and the American public after the shooting incident at the golf course.
Trump remarked, “The suspect acted because he believed in the rhetoric of Biden and Harris, which has put me in danger. I am the one striving to save the nation, while they are the ones bringing ruin — both from within and outside.”
His campaign also released ads and fundraising messages that echoed this sentiment.
Some critics argue that Trump is attempting to quash valid criticism while exhibiting his own intense inflammatory language.
Former U.S. Representative Joe Walsh commented on X earlier in the day: “Both statements hold true: the attempt on Trump’s life was absolutely terrible and should be condemned by all. No one deserves to face violence, regardless of their identity. It’s equally true that no political figure stirs up more hate and violence through their speech than Trump himself.”
On Sunday, police detained Ryan Routh, 56, after Secret Service agents fired shots at him for aiming a gun at the golf course where Trump was playing. Routh is a strong supporter of Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion and participated in North Carolina’s Democratic primary last March, according to records.
