Elderly Canine Discovers Lifelong Love After Dramatic Canal Rescue on a Shopping Cart

Senior dog rescued from a shopping cart finds a loving home: Discover the canal rescue

An unexpected scene was recorded when a senior dog was found hanging on to a partially submerged shopping cart in an Arizona canal, awaiting rescue from kind-hearted individuals.

In June, a 10-year-old Chihuahua mix named Dorothea was discovered half-floating in the canal waters of Phoenix. Looking wet and exhausted, she was resting her head on a makeshift raft formed by an old shopping cart that had become submerged and overgrown with plants.

Upon noticing her dire situation, a passerby contacted the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) for assistance. An Emergency Animal Medical Technician from AHS, Hunter Stribling, arrived at the scene along with the Phoenix Fire Department, according to a press announcement from the humane society.

Realizing the urgency of Dorothea’s rescue, the team quickly devised a plan. They entered the canal using a ladder and carefully lassoed her with an animal control pole to bring her to safety. Although she appeared a bit startled when finally guided to solid ground, AHS reported that Dorothea was “all tail wags” upon reaching the shore.

The circumstances that led Dorothea to end up in the canal remain unclear, as does the duration she spent there. During an evaluation on AHS’s Pet Ambulance, she was observed to be dehydrated and hungry, with a coat full of ticks, and she was “a bit stinky” from the canal water.

Once admitted to the AHS Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital for a more comprehensive examination, it was discovered that besides minor injuries and dental problems, Dorothea’s overall health was pretty stable.

After receiving treatment for a few broken teeth, the elderly pup spent nearly a month at the AHS shelter, where she received medical care, a pampering day, and gradually revealed her “sweet” and “loving” nature.

Praised for her affection and desire for human companionship, it wasn’t long before Dorothea captured the heart of a family in Youngtown, Arizona, who welcomed her into their forever home.

The Arizona Humane Society, which saves and cares for over 22,000 animals each year, views Dorothea’s story as just one example of resilience and survival. Those interested in learning more about AHS’s efforts and how they can contribute can visit the website at azhumane.org.
