Check Out the Steamy First Trailer for the ‘Cruel Intentions’ Reboot
A new decade brings a familiar tale.
The very first trailer for the “Cruel Intentions” reboot was released on Thursday, hinting at all the drama and teenage turmoil reminiscent of the original, but presented in an episodic style.
In the new series on Prime Video, Sarah Katherine Hook plays Caroline, the cunning stepsister of the charming antagonist Lucien, portrayed by Zac Burgess. The storyline revolves around a similar devious wager filled with lies, romance, and, naturally, cruelty.
The trailer showcases a contemporary interpretation of a beloved classic. The original film, which debuted in 1999, featured Reese Witherspoon as the innocent daughter of the headmaster and Ryan Phillippe as the rebellious guy determined to win her over. It also starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair.
While the original followed a group of affluent prep-school youths, the new version shifts the setting to today’s fraternity and sorority culture. Savannah Lee Smith takes on the role of the new version of Witherspoon’s character, Annie, who finds herself caught between Caroline and Lucien’s twisted bet. Caroline aims to have Annie, the daughter of the Vice President of the U.S., join her sorority and recruits Lucien to facilitate the seduction in his own unique way.
The cast of the series is not entirely fresh. Sean Patrick Thomas, who portrayed the young music instructor Ronald Clifford in the original film, will make a cameo as a professor seemingly caught up in an inappropriate relationship with a student.
Interestingly, Prime’s reboot is itself a remake of a remake, as the original 1999 film was a modern adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 novel “Dangerous Liaisons.”
‘Cruel Intentions’ Series Release Date on Amazon Prime Video
The first episode is scheduled to premiere on November 21 on Prime Video, with the remaining eight episodes to be released weekly on the platform.
