Heisman Trophy Update: Leading Candidates for Week 14 of the 2024 College Football Season

The Heisman Trophy competition seems to have narrowed down to four main contenders as we approach the last week of the regular season.

The winner will be celebrated at a ceremony on Saturday, December 14, in New York. Voting will take place from December 2 to December 9.

While quarterbacks dominated the headlines in the earlier part of the season, there has been a recent shift towards Boise State’s running back Ashton Jeanty and Travis Hunter, a versatile player for Colorado.

The other top candidates are Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Miami’s Cam Ward.

Here’s a breakdown of the top four Heisman contenders and their current standing as we enter Week 14 of the season:

Odds via BetMGM as of Friday, Nov. 29:

1. WR/DB Travis Hunter, Colorado (-1000)

Hunter’s season concluded after Colorado’s impressive 52-0 victory over Oklahoma State on Friday.

He has been nominated as a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, acknowledging his exceptional play as a receiver in 2024, wrapping up the regular season with 82 catches for 1,036 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Hunter also managed to score a rushing touchdown on two carries. As a defensive player, he made 30 tackles, defended nine passes, forced one fumble, and intercepted three passes.

2. RB Ashton Jeanty, Boise State (+750)

Jeanty completed his regular season on a high note with Boise State’s 34-18 win on Friday.

He racked up 275 carries for 2,062 rushing yards and scored 27 touchdowns over 12 games. Jeanty also caught a touchdown pass earlier this season and only had two fumbles throughout the year. Furthermore, he is a finalist for three other accolades, including the Doak Walker Award for the best running back.

Initially, Jeanty didn’t even make the list when the first betting odds were released.

3. QB Cam Ward, Miami (+1200)

Ward has maintained his position in third among the leading candidates since last week. He will compete in one more regular season game on Saturday as Miami faces off against the Syracuse Orange.

In his first 11 games, Ward completed 268 of 399 pass attempts for 3,774 yards, with 34 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

4. QB Dillon Gabriel, Oregon (+6600)

Gabriel is at the helm of the top-ranked team as they prepare for their last regular-season game at home against their rival, Washington.

Regardless of Saturday’s outcome, Oregon has already secured a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game. If the match isn’t closely contested, it might give Gabriel limited playing time, reducing his chances to showcase his skills for the individual award.

This season, Gabriel completed 259 of 351 pass attempts for 3,066 yards, throwing 22 touchdowns and six interceptions, along with rushing for six touchdowns.
