This Dog Waited on the Road Until Help Arrived, Then Led a Deputy to Save Her Injured Owner
Keith Johnson, 84, was unable to move after a fall resulted in a broken hip. His loyal dog, Gita, stayed in the road until a car stopped, then guided the deputy into the woods to find help for her owner.
Gita, a 13-year-old rescue dog, is being celebrated as a “true hero” after alerting authorities when her elderly owner fell and injured himself in Washington state last month, according to a Stevens County Sheriff’s Office report.
Deputy Colton Wright was patrolling a remote wooded area in Stevens County when he noticed a dog sitting in the middle of the road. With no houses around, he thought the dog might be lost and attempted to put Gita in his car to help find her owner.
Despite his efforts, Gita refused to get in the vehicle, which led the deputy to explore the nearby area.
“Feeling that something was wrong, Wright returned to the dog, who was then lying in the middle of the road,” the news release stated.
As he tried to move her off the road, Gita “took off down a less-traveled, unmarked road.”
Following the dog, the deputy arrived at a small summer cabin. While investigating the area, he discovered “an elderly man lying on the ground, calling for help, just a short distance from the cabin.”
It turns out Gita was trying to get assistance for her 84-year-old owner, who had fallen and injured his leg.
The man, who had several medical conditions requiring regular medication, had been lying on the ground for hours and “could have faced serious consequences” if he hadn’t been found, authorities noted.
Gita’s Owner Thought He Would ‘Die Out There’
Johnson shared with the media that he woke up to his glucose monitor indicating low blood sugar. He intended to grab some juice from the fridge when he noticed Gita needed to go outside, so he quickly let her out. However, Gita had other plans and headed towards the woods.
Keith followed her but had just turned around about 20 to 30 feet from the cabin when he suddenly felt dizzy and collapsed, breaking his hip.
He lay on the ground for almost six and a half hours, regularly calling for help, but due to the remote location, no one could hear him.
Meanwhile, Gita stayed by his side until she decided “she needed to act,” Johnson explained to KREM 2.
“She knew I required help, and she understood what she had to do to get it,” he said.
Wright recounted that when he found Gita lying across the centerline, she stood up, looked at him, and then ran toward the driveway, leading him to Johnson, who was waving his hand and calling for help.
Wright quickly checked on Johnson and then rushed back to his truck to call for medical assistance, remaining by Johnson’s side until help arrived.
‘A True Hero’
“We credit Gita for saving his life that day,” the sheriff’s office stated. “The loyalty and bravery of our furry friends always astounds us.”
The report also expressed gratitude to Deputy Wright for investigating the dog’s unusual actions.
Johnson remarked that he was “immensely relieved” to be saved and was grateful that it was Gita who helped him.
Currently, Johnson is recovering at a medical facility, where Gita visits him regularly, according to KREM 2.
