Holiday Heist Gone Wrong: Massachusetts Man Trapped Santa-Style in Chimney While Escaping Police

‘You’re an idiot’: Massachusetts man gets stuck Santa-style in chimney running from police

A man from Massachusetts found himself trapped in a chimney Tuesday night while trying to escape from police who were carrying out a search warrant. Body camera footage captured the dramatic rescue.

This unusual event took place in Fall River, located approximately 66 miles south of Boston.

According to a news release from the Fall River Police Department’s Community Action & Suppression Team, 33-year-old Robert Langlais and another individual were fleeing onto a rooftop when officers arrived to serve a search warrant.

The video began with an officer looking into a house and then shouting to his colleagues that at least one of the suspects was on the roof.

Santa-inspired escape attempt

One suspect jumped from the rooftop onto a nearby vehicle, while Langlais chose to “embrace the spirit of the holiday” by attempting to hide in a chimney, as described by the police.

A passerby reported to the police that he saw Langlais adopting a Santa-like approach to evading capture. The man recounted, “I was walking my dog earlier. I heard some yelling. Then I looked up and saw him going down the chimney.”

The officer shared this information with his colleagues and proceeded to investigate the situation regarding the chimney.

‘You’re an idiot’

Officers entered the house through a window, climbed up to the roof, and upon checking the chimney, they located Langlais.

“You’re an idiot,” one officer remarked as they illuminated the trapped man with a flashlight. “Show us your hands.”

Body camera footage revealed Langlais stuck in the chimney, with his left arm positioned slightly above his head. The officers ensured he could breathe while they awaited the arrival of the Fall River Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services.

‘I can fit’: Suspect gives police instructions on how to rescue him

As firefighters worked to remove the bricks enclosing him, Langlais provided them with helpful information to facilitate the rescue.

“I can fit,” he stated. “I weigh 109 pounds.”

They eventually pulled him out, prompting Langlais to shout as his leg twisted slightly.

“Because of his Santa-like antics, Langlais was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution and was given the all-clear,” police reported, adding that he faced charges for possessing Class A and Class B drugs along with several outstanding warrants.

The other suspect, 32-year-old Tanisha Ibay, was charged with possession of Class A drugs and possession of Class B drugs, according to police.

Social media users appeared to find humor in the police’s account of the incident.

“This is perfect,” commented one Facebook user. “Whoever wrote this deserves a place at my table; humor is always cherished!”
