Peter Burns from ESPN recounts how a Missouri fan ‘saved my life’ during a choking incident
ESPN’s Peter Burns shared that a fan from Missouri “saved my life” during a choking incident over the weekend.
Burns, who hosts various shows including “SEC Now” and “SEC This Morning,” posted on social media that he was out with colleagues in Columbia, Missouri on Friday night before the Missouri vs. Boston College game. While at dinner, he began choking on some food and signaled to those at the table that he was unable to breathe.
A friend attempted the Heimlich maneuver but was not successful. When Burns asked another person to try, it also failed. Eventually, a nurse stepped in to help, but her efforts didn’t dislodge the obstruction either.
After struggling to breathe for about two minutes, Burns described starting to lose his sight and began feeling faint.
Fortunately, a man named Jack Foster intervened just as Burns was nearing loss of consciousness. Foster managed to dislodge the food and shared that he was a youth sports coach who had recently undergone CPR training.
“It was that training that saved my life. I’m incredibly grateful to him and everyone else who came to my aid that night,” Burns expressed.
Burns later received assistance from Missouri football trainers. Following this alarming episode, he sustained minor fractures in four of his ribs.
According to the National Safety Council, choking ranks as the fourth leading cause of unintentional injury deaths, with 5,553 fatalities recorded in 2022.
