Key political figures, including President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, will observe Trump taking the oath of office as the 47th President around noon EST.

Though the tickets for the indoor inauguration are free (albeit limited), a significant number of travelers are packing up to attend this rare event held every four years. Flight searches to Washington, D.C. for this weekend have jumped almost 50%, and those to Baltimore have risen by 25% compared to last weekend, as reported by travel platform Hopper.

Travelers should be prepared to spend significantly if they want to experience this American tradition in person, with both airfare from major U.S. cities to Washington, D.C. and hotel demand seeing a substantial rise for the long weekend.

Hopper indicates that flight prices to Washington, D.C., and Baltimore from main U.S. cities are presently about 14% and 13% higher for this weekend compared to last weekend.

Individuals booking last-minute trips will face particularly steep prices, as noted by Expedia. For travel from January 17 through 21, round-trip tickets from Fort Lauderdale to D.C. cost $293, which is 130% above the normal rate. For the same dates, flights from Phoenix are priced at $748 and from Dallas at $473, representing a 115% increase from the average.

 

What are the hotel rates for Inauguration Day?

The surge of attendees for Inauguration Day is also driving up hotel prices for the weekend, according to Hopper. The average nightly rate for a hotel in Washington, D.C. on inauguration night is around $730, though some rooms can be found for as low as $392.

A recent search using the Hotels.com app showed room rates ranging from $700 to $1,600 per night from January 19 to 21, while rates for the following weekend are generally between $200 and $500 per night – an increase of up to 700%.

 

Those wishing to stay closer to the White House or in upscale accommodations can expect to pay a premium. For instance, the renowned Watergate Hotel, located just a mile from the White House, has a rate of $2,036 per night.
