Innovative Mapping Strategies Revolutionize Bird Conservation Efforts in Colombia

Researchers have developed a groundbreaking method for mapping the distribution of bird species in Colombia by leveraging community science data along with advanced modeling techniques.

Natalia Ocampo-PeƱuela, an assistant professor in environmental studies, and her team of Colombian researchers have created an innovative approach to mapping bird species across Colombia by utilizing community science data and advanced modeling methods.

Their recent study, published in the journal Diversity and Distributions, offers detailed range and Area of Habitat (AOH) maps for almost all terrestrial bird species residing in Colombia, including those that are endemic and threatened. These maps not only span 94 percent of Colombia’s terrestrial resident bird species but also equip conservationists with crucial resources for guiding future initiatives in one of the most biologically diverse areas on the planet.

ā€œEven though Colombia holds the title for the highest bird diversity globally, information regarding the distribution of many species is still scarce,ā€ explained Andres Felipe Suarez-Castro, a lecturer at Griffith University (Australia) and the primary author of the study. ā€œOur research discovered that many existing global maps lack the necessary precision for numerous species. Thankfully, the surge of open-access data allows us to merge ecological information with community science observations to improve our understanding of bird species distribution in Colombia.ā€

Having precise species distribution maps is crucial for making informed decisions about conservation, evaluating extinction risks, and protecting biodiversity. However, conventional methods often fail to provide the local-level detail that is necessary.

Ocampo-PeƱuelaā€™s team addressed these challenges by integrating expert-created maps with probabilistic modeling, elevation range data, and contributions from the community science platform eBird, where bird watchers and researchers record their observations. The outcome is a detailed portrayal of Colombia’s biodiversity, particularly in areas like the Andean-Amazon transition zone and the ChocĆ³ region.

ā€œThese maps reveal a much clearer view of the richness of species and biodiversity hotspots that were overlooked in the past due to historical conflicts or limited access,ā€ said Ocampo-PeƱuela. ā€œFor instance, we are now observing the global frontiers of deforestation right in these transition areas. This data is essential since these forests, which are home to many endemic species found nowhere else, are rapidly disappearing.ā€

To fill in the data gaps in regions like the Amazon and the DariƩn Gap, the researchers are calling for greater participation from local communities. Ocampo-PeƱuela believes that by enhancing local capabilities for monitoring biodiversity, Colombia can boost its conservation initiatives without always relying on external experts.

ā€œTo obtain comprehensive biodiversity data, it is crucial to empower local communities to monitor their ecosystems,ā€ she emphasizes. ā€œMany biodiversity research projects operate like ā€˜parachute science,ā€™ where knowledge leaves as swiftly as it arrives. A more sustainable, genuine approach involving community science is needed.ā€

The insights gained from this study and the novel mapping techniques have practical implications for local conservationists and national policymakers, especially as Colombia is currently hosting COP16, an important moment for global biodiversity conservation.

With the goal of protecting 30 percent of the worldā€™s land and oceans by 2030, achieving conservation targets is dependent on reliable data. Ocampo-PeƱuelaā€™s open-source methods can serve as a model for researchers in other biodiversity-rich countries to create similar maps using their local data.

ā€œThe true innovation lies not only in the accuracy of our maps but also in the transparency regarding what we know well and what we donā€™t,ā€ she adds. ā€œEach pixel on our map shows the level of certainty, which helps decision-makers identify areas where data is lacking.ā€

These maps are accessible to everyone, and researchers worldwide can update them as new information becomes available, providing a continuously improving resource for conservation. This framework is adaptable and can be applied to various other taxa and ecosystems beyond Colombia, including mammals and plants.

In addition to their practical use, Ocampo-PeƱuela and her team view these maps as a means to elevate Colombiaā€™s position in the field of global conservation science. ā€œWe are proud to have this research conducted by a Colombian team for Colombia. As Colombia hosts COP16, we hope this work will not only benefit our country but also inspire other nations to invest in similar research that empowers local scientists and conservationists,ā€ she notes.
