Honeycomb is the waxy, hexagonal structure made by bees that stores both the bees and their honey. Many people argue it’s both a healthy addition to one’s diet and a delightful snack.
“Those looking to indulge in something sweet while avoiding refined sugars will likely appreciate honeycomb,” says Shelley Balls, a registered dietitian and nutritionist for Consumer Health Digest, in an interview with YSL News. She highlights that honeycomb pairs wonderfully with cheese, yogurt, toast, and desserts, offering a chewy, waxy texture and a sweet, floral flavor.
Despite its appeal, honeycomb isn’t suitable for everyone. Here’s what dietary experts want you to understand before sampling it.
Reasons people enjoy honeycomb
Dietary experts point out that honeycomb boasts various health advantages, including antioxidants, enzymes, and nutrients like polyphenols, which studies suggest may lower the risk of diseases such as cancer.
“Honeycomb can be safe for consumption and is often enjoyed for its unique flavor, texture, and associated health perks,” states registered dietitian Trista Best in a discussion with YSL News. She mentions that there is some research indicating honeycomb “might aid digestion, boost immune function, and help reduce inflammation.”
Is it safe to eat honeycomb?
Technically speaking, you can eat honeycomb. However, professionals caution that not everyone should indulge, and there are specific limitations you should be mindful of before diving in.
As a critical note, if you are allergic to pollen or other bee-related products, it’s advisable to steer clear of honeycomb as well, warns Best.
Infants under the age of one should not be given honey or honeycomb, whether raw or processed, due to the risk of infant botulism—an uncommon but severe illness caused by bacteria sometimes present in honey, according to Balls.
Additionally, while honeycomb has certain health benefits, its high sugar level should be considered, especially for individuals with diabetes or other conditions that necessitate sugar limitations.
