Janitor at Miami Airport Arrested for Stealing $60,000 Worth of Watches

Authorities have arrested a janitor at Miami International Airport for allegedly stealing Rolex watches valued at $60,000 from a traveler, as reported by law enforcement officials.

Alberto Rabanal, age 57, is facing two counts of second-degree grand theft. If convicted, he could spend up to 15 years in prison and incur a fine of $10,000.

The Miami-Dade Police Department’s affidavit states that Rabanal stole the watches from a passenger who had just landed from Lisbon, Portugal, on Thursday night.

After passing through customs around midnight, the passenger briefly left his duty-free bag containing two Rolex watches on the ground next to a metal pillar and a trash can. He stepped away from the bag for a moment, leaving it unattended.

Detectives reviewed surveillance footage that showed Rabanal, on duty that night, noticing the unattended bag. He uncovered the bag, took out a black sweater that had been covering the watch boxes, and then moved the bag to a location hidden from view. There, he proceeded to steal the watches, according to the affidavit.

Rabanal subsequently discarded the duty-free bag into a trash can, as per the report.

Investigators were able to recover the stolen watches from Rabanal’s residence, where they were found in his master bedroom dresser on Monday. Rabanal admitted to the theft and was taken into custody at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without any issues.
