Patriots coach Jerod Mayo supports Jacoby Brissett as the starting quarterback
Despite a challenging performance where New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett only threw for 98 yards and was sacked five times in a 24-3 defeat against the New York Jets on Thursday night, head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed on Friday that Brissett will continue as the starter.
“Jacoby remains our quarterback until I decide otherwise,” Mayo stated.
Brissett was replaced by rookie Drake Maye late in the fourth quarter as the game slipped away. Maye made his NFL debut after being selected third overall by the Patriots in April’s draft.
Playing behind a makeshift offensive line, Brissett dealt with constant pressure throughout the game, completing 12 of 18 passes but losing 46 yards due to sacks.
Meanwhile, Maye was 4-of-8 for 22 yards and endured two sacks that cost him 13 yards.
The Patriots, now with a 1-2 record, have a nine-day break before facing the San Francisco 49ers. Following that, they will return home to battle AFC East rival Miami Dolphins and the Houston Texans, and then play a neutral-site match against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, before taking on the Jets again in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
