Lionel Messi Sets His Sights on Inter Miami Glory While Contemplating World Cup Aspirations

Lionel Messi reflects on Inter Miami’s quest for a title and his future in the World Cup

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Legendary soccer player Lionel Messi is not ready to commit to playing in the 2026 World Cup or announce when he plans to retire. The Argentinian World Cup winner and star player for Inter Miami is savoring the final stages of his iconic career with gratitude.

Messi received the MARCA America Award during a ceremony at Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium on Thursday. This accolade from Spain’s leading sports publication honors Messi’s impressive record of 46 titles with clubs and national teams, along with 57 individual accolades throughout his career.

While Messi is focused on guiding Inter Miami toward victory in the MLS Cup later this year, discussions about his potential participation in the next World Cup—co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada—continue to arise as he approaches age 39.

“I’ve managed to fulfill all my childhood dreams and even some I never imagined. I achieved the ultimate goal for any player—winning a World Cup. I’ve won many titles with the team I love, Barcelona, and also in Paris and now with Inter. I’m striving to achieve even more,” said a reflective Messi.

“I prefer not to rush things. I aim to enjoy each day. When the moment comes, we will see. I don’t want to speed things up or plan too far ahead; rather, I want to appreciate each day. I hope to keep performing at this level so I feel well and happy. Playing is what brings me joy, which I value more than simply aiming for the 2026 tournament. My focus is on living in the moment and staying healthy,” he added.

Messi admitted that the summer was tough for him after suffering a right ankle ligament injury during the Copa America final, forcing him to watch as Argentina claimed their second consecutive title on July 14 from the sidelines.

This week, Messi delivered his best performance of the year, scoring a hat trick and contributing two assists in a 6-0 rout of Bolivia for Argentina.

Since returning to the field on September 14, Messi has played in seven matches, netting eight goals. He played a key role in helping Inter Miami earn the MLS Supporters’ Shield for having the league’s top record and could help secure the MLS points record this Saturday against the New England Revolution in their regular-season finale.

Reflecting on his year, Messi remarked, “It has been a long year filled with significant injuries. I missed several games and struggled for almost two months, which was extremely challenging. It’s tough for me, especially when I have to train alone or feel unable to do anything.”

“That’s why it’s gratifying to return and finish on a strong note. I feel fit, strong, and ready for this final stretch,” he added.

Messi cherished his recent match in Argentina, recognizing he doesn’t have many opportunities left to represent his country at home.

He also emphasized that his move to Inter Miami in July 2023 was never intended as a way to step back from the game.

Messi is far from done; he simply wants to take his time in his remaining playing years.

“I have endured a lot and faced many challenges in Argentina, but now I appreciate every moment even more. As I age, I find myself more excited and thoughtful about everything in my career,” he expressed.

“I always aim to remain at my best, and my decision to come here didn’t indicate retirement—not at all. We came to continue contributing to this club’s success and to strive for championships,” Messi concluded.
