Madison police prioritize finding motive behind Wisconsin school shooting
MADISON, Wis. — The main focus for law enforcement in Madison is to uncover the motive behind the shooting at Abundant Life Christian School, where a teacher and a student were killed, and several others were injured. The community is coming together for solemn vigils to remember the victims.
According to police, 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow opened fire during a study hall, injuring multiple individuals in the classroom. Rupnow later died from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound on her way to the hospital. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes noted that the medical examiner has not yet confirmed the cause of death.
Authorities are currently investigating the handgun discovered at the scene, and are also looking into the suspect’s social media accounts and online writings. Investigators are reaching out to Rupnow’s family and friends to see if bullying was among the “multiple factors” that might have led to the shooting.
Officials stated that it remains uncertain where the suspect acquired the firearm and whether Rupnow’s parents may face legal charges.
As of Tuesday afternoon, two students were reported to be in critical condition, while three other students and one teacher sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.
Vigil pays tribute to Abundant Life Christian School victims
Across Madison, many have come together in churches and at nightly vigils to mourn and process the recent tragedy, marking the city’s second school shooting within a year. On Tuesday night, hundreds gathered at the state Capitol for a public vigil organized by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County. Participants helped each other light candles and signed three crosses set up in the area.
Charles Moore, executive director of Impact Christian Schools, which oversees Abundant Life, shared with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, part of the YSL News Network, “it’s hard to grasp the shock” of this situation.
“There are still children in the hospital with severe injuries,” Moore emphasized. “This situation has deep ramifications that extend beyond just the initial moment. Lives have been irrevocably altered.”
Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway addressed the crowd, highlighting that the city will be permanently impacted and encouraged unity in facing the challenges ahead.
“Let’s create a community where we actively help those in need,” Rhodes-Conway stated. “Let’s be a supportive community taking care of one another in response to this act of gun violence.”
