Several wildfires across California are leading to fatalities, mass evacuations, and significant property damage, particularly in Malibu.

The Palisades Fire ignited around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, quickly spreading to nearly 3,000 acres between Santa Monica and Malibu. The fire, which has been hard to control, has now scorched over 11,000 acres in the area.

The Getty Villa, located at the eastern end of Malibu’s coastline in the Pacific Palisades, saw its surrounding trees and vegetation set ablaze, but the building itself remains standing, as confirmed by Getty officials via social media. The J. Paul Getty Museum, noted for its collection of Greek and Roman antiquities in a “recreated Roman country home,” will be closed to visitors until Monday, as per the Getty’s announcements.

Firefighters are actively working to put out the wildfires in Malibu, and photos taken from the scene highlight both their courageous efforts and the extensive destruction resulting from strong Santa Ana winds, low humidity, and dry plants.
