Mathieu Olivier of the Columbus Blue Jackets Engages in Dual Fights Following Controversial Boarding Penalty

Mathieu Olivier of Columbus Blue Jackets Fights Twice After Boarding Incident

Mathieu Olivier, a forward for the Columbus Blue Jackets, has had numerous skirmishes over his six-year career in the NHL.

He added two more fights on Friday during a 5-2 victory against the Calgary Flames, reacting to a hit that caused injury in the second period.

Olivier hit Flames defenseman Joel Hanley into the boards, leaving him down on the ice. In response, Hanley’s teammate Martin Pospisil confronted Olivier. Initially, Olivier had the advantage until Calgary’s Brayden Paschal intervened, allowing Pospisil to throw a few punches. Olivier then pushed Paschal and challenged the Flames bench.

Olivier received a two-minute minor penalty for boarding and an additional five minutes for fighting. Meanwhile, Pospisil was handed five minutes for fighting and Paschal received a two-minute penalty for roughing.

Hanley managed to get up, leave for the locker room, and returned for the third period, but Olivier still had to settle the score again before that happened.

With just 22 seconds remaining in the second period, he fought Flames player Ryan Lomberg. Olivier came out on top once again, knocking Lomberg’s helmet off despite Lomberg landing a solid punch, while Olivier absorbed several hits to the head and body.

“The game just kind of evolved that way,” Olivier remarked after the game, as reported by the Columbus Dispatch, part of the YSL News Network. “I made a hit that I thought wasn’t too bad at the time. After looking at it, I realize it was kind of questionable, which led to everything. You have to be prepared to defend yourself when that happens.”
