At the Democratic National Convention, DJ Cassidy, a Grammy-nominated artist who made history as the first “music maestro” for a convention roll call, took to the stage on Tuesday evening. He introduced various musical artists and states during this unique event.
According to the LA Times, Cassidy, originally from California, donned a shiny blue suit, a beige hat, and square sunglasses as he greeted the audience with Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” playing in the background.

As the Democratic delegates cast their votes to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris, Cassidy played unique songs that represented each state.
The Tennessee delegation grooved to Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5,” while Texas celebrated with Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em,” hailing from Houston.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul highlighted the state’s historical importance with Jay Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State Of Mind,” whereas California Governor Gavin Newsom showcased the Golden State with a mix of Tupac Shakur’s “California Love” and Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.”
Another track by Beyoncé, “Freedom,” echoed when Harris made a surprise live appearance to accept the party’s nomination from an event in Wisconsin alongside her running mate Tim Walz.
A ‘truly surreal’ experience
DJ Cassidy transformed what former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki described as a typically “not fun or cool” political event into an exciting occasion filled with music and dancing.
<p”The entire night felt surreal,” Cassidy shared with Psaki during an MSNBC interview.
The DNC roll call required four weeks of detailed planning.
This ceremonial roll call took place on Tuesday, the second day of the convention in Chicago. Cassidy noted that music had never been part of this process before, which was something he found challenging to comprehend.
