WASHINGTON – You may call her by her full name, but it’s clear Melania Trump has long moved past that.

The former first lady might not have had as many creative or policy achievements as figures like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Bono, or Hillary, yet here she is, just a month before Election Day, releasing a brief memoir titled simply “Melania” (256 pp, Skyhorse).

This book is filled with images of the former fashion model and offers a straightforward account of her life, covering everything from her upbringing in Yugoslavia during the Cold War—where her father was a successful businessman with a chic Citroën Maserati SM—up to her move to New York at age 26 and her life with a certain real estate mogul-turned-president.

However, “Melania” avoids discussing much about the Trump presidency. No need to worry, though—many former aides and appointees have stepped up to share their insights. Therefore, it’s not worth the $40 price tag for anyone looking for deep political analysis.

Instead, the memoir portrays a woman who has been close to significant power—and could be again—while emphasizing her strong commitment to her son, parents, and husband.

Below are seven key points from “Melania.”

Melania Questions the 2020 Election

While not as extreme in her statements as Donald Trump, Melania expresses firm belief that the 2020 election was stolen.

In her book, she writes that leading up to the November 2020 election, there was a concerted effort by “the media, Big Tech, and the deep state” to prevent Donald from winning “by any means necessary.” She expresses concern that the election would be unfair.

Melania mentions “suspicious voting activities” reported throughout the country on Election Day, conveniently overlooking the reality that over 30 judges—including those appointed by her husband—dismissed Trump’s election lawsuits based on their lack of merit.

Additionally, there’s no reference to the criminal charges facing the former president related to his attempts to overturn the election results.

“Many Americans still harbor doubts today,” she asserts. “I am not alone in questioning the results.”

Melania Supports Abortion Rights

Melania Trump is not the first first lady to diverge from her husband’s stance on significant issues. Laura Bush also endorsed abortion rights while George W. Bush’s administration opposed it.

Recent polls indicate that Donald Trump, who has taken pride in the Supreme Court’s overturning of the constitutional right to abortion, is struggling with female voters compared to Kamala Harris.

Highlighting it as a matter of personal freedom, Melania states, “A woman’s basic right to personal liberty and her own life allows her to make decisions regarding her pregnancy.”

In the Situation Room

One of the first lady’s roles is to oversee the White House’s decor and maintenance, and “Melania” shares her efforts to renovate the aged presidential residence.

However, during October 2019, she recounts being summoned from her tasks to join President Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, the military leaders, and others in the Situation Room to observe a live broadcast of the Delta Force operation in Syria.

The objective: Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the self-proclaimed leader of the Islamic State. “Watch this incredible operation,” Trump whispers.

Melania remarks on her admiration for the mission but left before the operation reached its conclusion: Al-Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest as he was pursued by military dogs, resulting in his death.

Protective of Barron

Melania expresses her anger towards Rosie O’Donnell, a former “The View” host and adversary of her husband, following a Twitter incident that involved their then-10-year-old son Barron Trump.

Just two weeks post Donald Trump’s election win in 2016, O’Donnell shared a video hinting that Barron might be on the autism spectrum, claiming she aimed to reduce stigma.

“I was shocked by such harshness. It was apparent to me that she didn’t aim to raise awareness about autism,” Melania explains. “I felt she was attacking my son simply because of her dislike for my husband.”

“There is nothing shameful about autism (despite the implication in O’Donnell’s tweet), but Barron is not autistic,” she clarifies. “…Targeting a ten-year-old boy is unacceptable, yet doing so under the guise of ‘raising awareness’ is indeed awful.”

After a few days, O’Donnell apologized and removed her tweet.

Where’s Stormy?

Melania doesn’t address the numerous allegations of sexual misconduct against Donald Trump, including his alleged affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels and a reported relationship with former Playboy model Karen McDougal, along with more serious allegations from various women, such as author E. Jean Carroll.

This year, a civil verdict was reached against the former president for assaulting Carroll, followed by defamation when he denied the incident. He has been convicted of multiple felonies in a New York court—an unprecedented situation for a former president—related to the falsification of business records to cover up hush money payments to Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 elections. Trump is currently appealing both decisions.

Unaware and then shocked on Jan. 6

Melania states that she was initially slow to realize the violent mob attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021. While working with a team to prepare the White House for the next administration, she recalls, “I didn’t see it as the day Congress would affirm the election results.”

Stephanie Grisham, a former aide to both Melania and Donald Trump, described her attempt to get Melania to denounce the Capitol violence while the president was still reluctant to do so. Reportedly, Melania simply responded, “No.”

“Had I known all the details, I would have certainly condemned the violence immediately,” Melania states in her memoir.

She shares that it wasn’t until the White House’s chief usher notified her that she became aware of the Capitol events. Her condemnation also includes criticism of Pence, who was targeted by rioters for not blocking Biden’s victory certification.

“The events we witnessed were absolutely unacceptable,” Melania asserts. “While I understood that many felt the election was mishandled and that the vice president should halt the confirmation process, we must never turn to violence.”

Blood on the stage

One of the most gripping moments in “Melania” reflects a pivotal event in the nation this year: the attempted assassination of Donald Trump by a 20-year-old sniper during a July campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Melania doesn’t focus on how dangerously close Trump was to being harmed that day. Instead, she honors firefighter Corey Comperatore, who was tragically killed in the chaos, while highlighting how challenging it can be to turn away from distressing events: “The constant replay of the rally footage on the news only heightened our anxiety.”
