NBC selects Mike Tirico as lead play-by-play announcer for 2025-26 NBA coverage
NBC has chosen its main announcer for NBA broadcasts.
On Wednesday, the network revealed that Mike Tirico, who also hosts NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” and provides coverage for the Olympics, will take the role of lead play-by-play announcer for NBA games.
NBC acquired the rights to NBA games from Turner Sports, starting with the 2025-26 season in October.
Before this, Tirico served as one of ESPN’s play-by-play announcers for the NBA from 2002 to 2016. Over his career, he has been the play-by-play voice for about 375 regular-season and playoff games, according to NBC. Additionally, during his tenure at ESPN, he provided play-by-play commentary for NBA games on ESPN Radio.
Tirico joined NBC in 2016 and has also been involved in major events such as the Kentucky Derby, the U.S. Open, and the Indianapolis 500.
“I am excited to return to the courtside for NBA games,” Tirico stated in a news release on Wednesday. “My 15 years covering the best basketball players globally are among the highlights of my career. Like many others, I fell in love with the league during the amazing days of NBA on NBC in the ’90s. Being part of reviving that iconic collaboration is incredibly exciting for us.”
NBC mentioned that once the NFL season and the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics wrap up in February 2026, Tirico will likely cover one or more NBA games each week. However, he may also call significant games early in the 2025-26 NBA season, including the opening game in October 2025.
“From the Olympics to ‘Sunday Night Football,’ major golf championships, and now the NBA, Mike is the most adaptable voice in sports,” said Sam Flood, NBC Sports executive producer, in the news release.
Tirico will be joined by former NBA player Jamal Crawford, who will serve as the game analyst during the broadcasts.
