Minnesota Vikings Owners Transform Orlando Soccer Teams into Championship Contenders

An NFL ownership group’s shift from football to soccer has propelled a U.S. city to new victories in the sport.

Recently, the Orlando Pride claimed their inaugural title in the National Women’s Soccer League, marking the first professional sports championship for Orlando.

Meanwhile, Orlando City SC is just one match away from vying for the Major League Soccer championship. They will face the New York Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference finals this Saturday during the MLS Cup playoffs.

The Wilf family, who have owned the Minnesota Vikings since 2005, has utilized their nearly two decades of NFL experience to enhance Orlando’s soccer scene after acquiring both MLS and NWSL franchises in 2021.

“There’s a lot of synergy,” Mark Wilf, co-owner of all three teams alongside his brother Zygi and cousin Lenny, shared with YSL News Sports. “The Vikings contribute to the leadership at the Orlando Soccer Clubs. We’ve learned both from our missteps and our successes.

“Overall, our strategy involves investing in attracting top talent, fostering the best environments, and establishing strong leadership, as well as support. Competing at a professional level is extremely challenging, and we aim to position ourselves to contend year after year.”

Wilf recognized the contributions of Orlando City’s coach, Oscar Pareja, as well as the club’s president of business operations, Jarrod Dillon, and general manager Luiz Muzzi, for guiding the team to its first Eastern Conference final.

Orlando City holds the highest seed remaining in the Eastern Conference, overcoming strong competition including renowned players like Lionel Messi, last season’s MLS Cup champions the Columbus Crew, and the previous Supporters’ Shield winners FC Cincinnati.

They secured victory against Charlotte FC in the first round and eliminated Atlanta United in the second round last week.

Should they win on Saturday, Orlando City could meet the L.A. Galaxy or Seattle Sounders in the MLS Cup final on December 7.

“Oscar maintains a consistent approach and is willing to make necessary adjustments. He adapted during the season; despite a tough start, our performance has been strong since July. This is a fantastic chance for us to win our first league trophy,” Wilf reflected, mentioning Orlando City’s initial struggles with only five wins in the first 20 MLS games this season.

“The Red Bulls are performing exceptionally well, along with the two Western teams. This is going to be a fierce competition to the end. I trust Oscar will have them well-prepared this weekend.”

Wilf also commended Pride coach Seb Hines and vice president of soccer operations Haley Carter for leading the team to both the NWSL Shield and the NWSL title this season.

The Pride secured their NWSL title by defeating the Washington Spirit 1-0 on November 23, thanks to Barbra Banda’s crucial goal. Banda was named Championship MVP, having scored four goals in three playoff matches. The team also features Brazilian legend Marta, recognized as the greatest female soccer player ever.

“We’ve assembled exceptional individuals and invested resources to ensure our personnel meets first-class standards,” Wilf stated. “Haley constructed the roster with a commendable work ethic and leadership that players aspire to support. Everything came together perfectly.”

The Vikings are also primed for a strong playoff run in the NFL this season, currently sitting second in the NFC North with a 9-2 record ahead of their Sunday matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

Wilf recognized Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, coach Kevin O’Connell, defensive coordinator Brian Flores, and quarterback Sam Darnold for their efforts in reversing last season’s 7-10 finish.

“We are aware that our division is highly competitive,” Wilf noted. “As we approach the final weeks, we are dedicated to improving and peaking at the right time.”

Significantly, the Vikings received the highest rankings in 2023 and second place in 2024 according to an NFL Players Association report, with players recognizing the Vikings for having the best owners, coaches, and facilities in the league.

The Wilfs’ commitment to enhancing the Vikings’ facilities and personnel has significantly impacted their soccer teams as they strive for championship success.

“It’s remarkable to see where we started in 2021 when we acquired these clubs and how far we’ve come,” Wilf commented. “Our aim has always been to create world-class facilities, establish a first-rate organization, enhance fan experiences, and build a presence in the community, striving for championships along the way.

“It would be incredibly special to see the men achieve what the women have accomplished.”
