Body discovered in Hilton Head, SC identified as missing Massachusetts man
Authorities report that a 60-year-old man from Massachusetts, missing for over a week, has likely been found deceased under a home at a South Carolina resort he was visiting with his family.
Stanley Kotowski vanished suddenly on August 16 while leaving the vacation rental on Hilton Head Island. Local law enforcement in Beaufort County conducted extensive searches, as Kotowski was reportedly experiencing a mental health episode.
On Monday, the search concluded when deputies investigating suspicious activity found a man’s body beneath a residence, which authorities believe to be Kotowski, according to a Facebook update from the sheriff’s office.
Kotowski left rental property barefoot and without phone
Kotowski and his family, originally from Methuen (about 30 miles north of Boston), were on vacation at Hilton Head Island when he disappeared.
He was last seen on the morning of August 16, leaving the Sea Pines Resort rental barefoot and without his phone or wallet, as reported by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
Footage from home surveillance, released by the sheriff’s office, shows Kotowski leaving the house calmly, without signs of distress. He is seen walking barefoot to the street and pausing briefly before disappearing from view.
Jackie Kotowski, his wife, told the media that her husband had been battling anxiety, insomnia, and paranoia.
“He felt as if someone was chasing him,” Jackie shared with ABC affiliate WJCL in Savannah, Georgia.
The sheriff’s office utilized canine units, drones, and helicopters during their search efforts, while firefighters searched residential and wooded areas. For several days, the only signs of Kotowski were sporadic recordings from neighbors’ home cameras.
Kotowski’s body thought to be found beneath Sea Pines residence
Ten days after his disappearance, Kotowski is now believed to have been found deceased.
At 11:30 a.m. local time Monday, deputies were summoned to a Sea Pines home due to reported suspicious activity. During their investigation, “the body of a deceased male was found underneath a residence,” the sheriff’s office reported.
The body, presumed to be Kotowski’s, was retrieved by 3:30 p.m., and an autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death, according to authorities.
However, Kotowski’s family confirmed to WJCL that the body found belonged to him and was located beneath a house just four houses away from their rental.
