Social media threat prompts school closures across New Jersey
Following an online threat targeting multiple schools, police have taken at least three suspects into custody, which resulted in two school districts closing their doors on Monday. Meanwhile, two other districts increased their police presence.
The threats were directed towards specific schools in the Woodbury, Deptford, Glassboro, and Haddon Heights districts located in southern New Jersey. Glassboro police credited the cooperation between various law enforcement agencies, as well as community members, for helping to identify the suspects.
“Two juveniles, one from Woodbury and the other from Glassboro, have been found, identified, and arrested concerning the online threats made against our schools,” stated the Glassboro police. “We appreciate all agencies involved and the individuals from the community who provided tips that allowed us to resolve this matter quickly.”
This incident follows closely after a tragic shooting, in which a 14-year-old student was charged with killing two students and two teachers at his high school in Winder, Georgia.
The Woodbury City school district, having over 1,700 students, issued a notice on its website announcing that classes will be canceled on Monday. Officials indicated that, while the threat is deemed not credible, the district is “taking extreme caution to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and families. Rest assured, school safety is our top priority, and we are implementing all necessary precautions to maintain a secure environment.”
The district stated that they were collaborating closely with police to investigate the origin of the threats and encourage families to “stay alert” and report any relevant information to law enforcement or school officials.
Kevin Kanauss, the superintendent for Deptford Township schools, which serves over 4,000 students, announced that “after a thorough review of the investigation’s progress with our security team and law enforcement, I have decided to close schools for Monday, September 9, 2024, purely as a precaution to ensure the safety and security of our entire Deptford Spartan Community.”
While schools in the Glassboro and Haddon Heights districts were also threatened, officials confirmed those schools would remain open but with increased police presence.
