Oscar Nominations Postponed Due to Catastrophic Fires in Los Angeles: Expected Announcement Date Revealed

Oscar nominations postponed due to severe LA wildfires: When will nominees be revealed?

The Academy Awards have rescheduled several important dates in light of the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles.

The wildfires, active since January 7, have claimed the lives of at least 24 individuals and devastated thousands of structures throughout the LA region, including famous landmarks and the homes of various celebrities. Consequently, the announcement of this year’s Oscar nominations has been postponed to January 23, shifting from the original date of January 17. This announcement will occur virtually, with no in-person media attendance.

Voting for the nominations has also been extended to January 17, instead of the earlier deadline of January 12. The annual Oscar nominees luncheon, a gathering for actors, filmmakers, and crew for a traditional “class photo,” has been completely canceled.

Additionally, the Scientific and Technical Awards, which honor innovations in filmmaking, will no longer take place on February 18 and will be rescheduled for a later date yet to be announced.

“We are all heartbroken by the fires’ devastation and the significant losses endured by many in our community,” stated Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang in a combined statement on Monday. “The Academy has consistently served as a unifying force in the film industry, and we are dedicated to supporting one another during these tough times.

“Given the ongoing fires in the Los Angeles area, we believe it is essential to extend our voting timeline and move our nominations announcement date to provide more time for our members.”

The Academy leaders emphasized their wish to “unite as a community” and utilize the awards as a platform “to celebrate the resilience and compassion of our industry. We also look forward to honoring the frontline workers who have assisted in battling the fires, acknowledging those affected, and urging people to join the Academy in supporting relief efforts. Together, we will overcome this and foster a sense of healing within our global film community.”
