Political Rivalry Takes Center Stage in Hilarious ‘SNL’ Cold Open with Kamala Harris and Donald Trump

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump compete on ‘Family Feud’ during ‘SNL’ cold open

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris went head-to-head once more before the upcoming election—this time on “Saturday Night Live.”

The latest cold open of the NBC comedy show featured Trump (portrayed by James Austin Johnson) opting out of a presidential debate with Harris (Maya Rudolph) but agreeing to take part in a round of “Family Feud.” Joining Harris on the Democratic team were second gentleman Douglas Emhoff (Andy Samberg), Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (Jim Gaffigan), and President Joe Biden (Dana Carvey). The Republican team included Donald Trump Jr. (Mikey Day) and Senator JD Vance (Bowen Yang).

“It’s fantastic to be here, Steve,” Rudolph’s Harris commented to host Steve Harvey, played by Kenan Thompson. “I’m so happy to see a man making millions of dollars at his Black job.” After Harris noted her campaign raised $1 billion, Harvey questioned why she wasn’t winning by a landslide, leading her to chuckle nervously. “That’s a question I scream into my pillow every morning,” she replied. The sketch also poked fun at Harris’s recent media efforts, with Samberg’s Emhoff remarking he was “not asked” to do any interviews.

On the Republican side, Yang’s Vance expressed his appreciation that they were on a show that “celebrates families, unlike the Democrats, who turned our hero, the Joker, into a gay guy who’s obsessed with Lady Gaga!”

During the game, participants were prompted to name an item they keep in their glove compartment. After buzzing in, Rudolph’s Harris delivered a lengthy story about her family before finally answering, “A glock, Steve. A big old glock.” Samberg’s Emhoff, clearly impressed with her answer, echoed it—only to find it was also on the board (as another gun).

Biden, meanwhile, was depicted by Carvey as a bit disoriented, mistakenly calling Harvey “Regis” (referring to the late talk show host Regis Philbin) and inquiring about buying a vowel. “I’m not the old one now; Trump is,” he stated. “The only difference is I know when to walk away: about six months too late!” The sketch concluded with Johnson’s Trump delivering a lengthy and jumbled response, prompting Harvey to shout, “Show me dementia!”

Ariana Grande impersonates Britney Spears, Jennifer Coolidge and more on ‘SNL’

Ariana Grande hosted the episode, showcasing her excellent celebrity impressions throughout. In her opening monologue, the “Wicked” star sang a humorous tune about how she wouldn’t be singing during the episode, while briefly impersonating Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, and Gwen Stefani.

Grande also joked during her monologue, “The last time I hosted was in 2016, and we were on the brink of electing our first female president, so I guess second time’s the charm.”

Later, Grande burst into laughter while doing her Jennifer Coolidge impression in a sketch where the “White Lotus” star talks to her reflection in a Maybelline commercial, and in another segment, she portrayed Celine Dion in a parody of the singer’s recent promo for Sunday Night Football.

Stevie Nicks performs ‘The Lighthouse,’ ‘Edge of Seventeen’ on ‘SNL’

This week’s musical guest was Stevie Nicks, who captivated audiences with her new feminist anthem “The Lighthouse.” She revealed she began writing the song in response to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. Nicks also performed her classic hit “Edge of Seventeen.”

“SNL” is set to return next week with host Michael Keaton and musical guest Billie Eilish.
