The English Premier League to Share VAR Updates on Social Media during Games
The Premier League aims to ease frustrations surrounding the VAR system by launching a social media platform that will provide timely updates and explanations about officiating decisions for each match.
Despite significant criticism of the technology-assisted officiating system during the past season, teams voted in June to continue using VAR, although Wolverhampton Wanderers did begin a petition to eliminate it.
“While live VAR audio cannot be broadcast as this is prohibited in football, the Premier League Match Centre will share near-real-time information from the VAR Hub on social media during games,” the league stated on Tuesday.
Alongside sharing refereeing decisions, their X account, @PLMatchCentre, will also offer insights directly from the VAR hub and refereeing experts to promote transparency, according to the league.
Officials from PGMOL, the governing body for referees, will also explain the rules of the game and provide extra details about the VAR decision-making process whenever needed.
