A woman taken into custody for alleged trespassing at Seattle airport for the second time in three days
A woman was detained for the second time in just a week at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, shortly after she allegedly boarded a Delta Air Lines flight without purchasing a ticket.
The Port of Seattle Police Department (POSPD) responded on Friday to assist the Transportation Security Administration with an individual deemed to have “no valid reason to be at the airport,” as stated by an airport spokesperson in an email to YSL News. The woman was identified as Shemaiah Small, 33 years old.
According to the spokesperson’s statement, “TSA made initial contact with the person near Checkpoint 3 and requested assistance from POSPD.” Upon investigation, police confirmed she had no legitimate reason to be at the airport and placed her under arrest for trespassing.
The statement further clarified, “The individual did not go through any of the security checkpoints.” Small claimed to police that she was waiting for her sister, but provided a fictitious airline name and an invalid phone number for her sister.
Attempts to get in touch with Small at the provided phone number were unsuccessful.
This situation occurred just days after she allegedly boarded a Delta Air Lines flight to Honolulu, Hawaii, without a boarding pass on December 24.
An airline representative confirmed that an unticketed passenger was found aboard the taxiing plane, prompting it to return to the gate. The passenger was removed from the aircraft, and TSA conducted additional safety screening for the remaining passengers.
This incident resulted in a delay of two hours and fifteen minutes.
Delta Airlines stated, “Safety and security are our top priorities. Our staff adhered to protocols to remove an unticketed passenger and to ensure the incident was handled appropriately.” They expressed apologies to the customers for the travel delay and thanked them for their understanding. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
After deplaning, police alleged that Small provided a false name and birthday. She claimed to have come from San Francisco to visit her boyfriend in Seattle, stating he had purchased their tickets and accompanied her through the airport.
However, when law enforcement contacted the boyfriend, he denied knowledge of her and said he was not the person she named, according to the police report.
As a result, Small was arrested for trespassing and providing false information.
A spokesperson from TSA mentioned that the passenger “skipped the identity verification and boarding status checks” but did go through the usual security screening and had no banned items.
“TSA takes all incidents at any of our checkpoints across the nation seriously,” they said in an email to YSL News. “TSA will conduct a full review of this situation at our document check station at Seattle/Tacoma International.”
This occurrence is part of a troubling trend; in November, another Delta flight from New York City to Paris also had a stowaway on board.
