Reviving History: The Unkind Raven Bookstore Breathes New Life into a 1845 Tennessee Home

How The Unkind Raven bookstore revitalized a historic Tennessee house built in 1845

Independent bookstores play a vital role in today’s world. As equitable access to literature faces challenges, these bookstores act as a safeguard against censorship and provide valuable support to their communities.

Every week, we shine a spotlight on a unique independent bookstore and delve into what differentiates them, along with their top book recommendations.

This week, we’d like to introduce Leah Gilkerson and Kaitlyn Parker from The Unkind Raven in Dandridge, Tennessee!

Can you share your store’s story?

We envisioned The Unkind Raven Booktique as a community hub that brings people together through workshops, fundraisers, and various events. Our delightful indie bookstore resides within the historic Hynds House, built in 1845, located in downtown Dandridge. As a women-led enterprise, we proudly opened our doors in December 2023, offering a warm welcome to all visitors.

What makes your bookstore stand out?

We are distinguished by our dedication to fostering community connections through a variety of classes, donating children’s books, and having a dedicated museum in our historic space, making it a place where stories come to life. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive literary experience, making us not just a bookstore, but a cultural center for everyone.

What is your favorite area in the bookstore?

Our favorite spaces are the cozy rooms, perfect for getting lost in a book or enjoying fun games with friends, allowing for unforgettable moments in the heart of our historic building.

Which book do you frequently suggest to customers, and why?

We always recommend Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” due to its powerful message against censorship and the defense of literature. Also, John Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” is a timeless classic that often gets overlooked!

Why is it important to shop at local independent bookstores?

Shopping at local bookstores is crucial because it supports the local economy, maintains community character, and sustains local jobs. These smaller stores often provide tailored recommendations, exclusive selections, and foster a sense of belonging, enriching the literary culture that honors diversity and uniqueness.

What upcoming programs or events do you want to share about your store?

This October, we are excited to carry out our vision with a range of activities including pottery and jewelry-making classes, a release party and reading event, The Unkind Raven One Year Anniversary Booktacular, as well as fun Halloween-themed events like cookie decorating and stained glass making.
