Travel guide Rick Steves reveals he has cancer: ‘It’s the favorable kind to have’
Rick Steves, a well-known American travel author, guidebook writer, and longtime host on PBS, announced on Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
In a detailed message shared on social media, Steves, who is 69 years old, informed his followers about his diagnosis and what he anticipates in the upcoming months.
According to Steves, his doctor mentioned that “if you’re going to have cancer, this is a beneficial type to have,” and his scans so far indicate that the cancer has not spread.
He opted not to disclose the specific stage of the cancer.
For now, it will be business as usual for the beloved travel expert. Steves mentioned in his statement that his doctor has approved him to film two new television series in France during the next three weeks, and he will return to his home in Edmonds, Washington by mid-September.
After his return home, Steves stated that he is expected to undergo prostate surgery in the hospital for a few days in late September.
“I’ll probably have surgery at the end of September, be out of commission for about a month, and—if all goes well—be cancer-free and back to work by the end of October,” Steves expressed.
Steves also emphasized his optimistic mindset, stating that he feels he is approaching his cancer diagnosis “like it’s an extraordinary and significant journey.”
As with all adventures, he encouraged his fans to send him love, support, and any “travel advice” they might have for him on this new path.
