Robert Saleh was reportedly caught off guard by his dismissal as Jets head coach
On Tuesday, the firing of Robert Saleh as the head coach of the New York Jets came as a surprise to many, including Saleh himself.
According to Fox’s Jay Glazer, he spoke with Saleh after the Jets’ owner Woody Johnson informed him of the decision, and Saleh expressed his shock.
“I just spoke to Robert Saleh, who mentioned he was blindsided when Woody Johnson came to his office and let him go. He’s notably disappointed that he won’t get a chance to maximize the potential of what he described as a strong roster,” Glazer shared on the social platform X, previously known as Twitter.
Reports from NBC Sports indicated that following the firing, Saleh was escorted out of the team’s facility by the director of security.
In a statement earlier that day, Johnson said he spoke to Saleh in the morning and thanked him for his “hard work” throughout his more than three years with the team.
“This was not an easy decision, but with our current performance not meeting expectations, I believe it’s time for a change,” Johnson stated.
Just a day prior, Saleh held his last press conference as the head coach, expressing optimism about the team. Currently, the Jets hold a 2-3 record, having lost their last two games amid struggles from Aaron Rodgers and the offense.
“The current standings will look very different by the end of the season. There’s a lot more football to be played. There’s plenty we can improve upon and continue developing based on what we are doing right. So, there’s no panic from me or anyone in the building,” Saleh stated.
Saleh wraps up his tenure with the Jets with a record of 20 wins and 36 losses, failing to reach the playoffs.
