Ryan Reynolds Reflects on Delayed Tribute to Rob Delaney’s Son in ‘Deadpool’
Ryan Reynolds is finally honoring Rob Delaney’s late son.
The star and producer of “Deadpool & Wolverine” took to Instagram on Monday to share why the dedication to Delaney’s 2-year-old son, Henry, is coming now instead of during the credits of “Deadpool 2.” Henry passed away in February 2018, just months before the release of the second film.
“There’s more to @robdelaney than some might think,” wrote Reynolds, 47, alongside a series of photos from the film set featuring himself, Delaney, 47, as Peterpool (aka Sugar Bear), and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Delaney wrote about his son’s passing in his memoir, “A Heart That Works,” which Reynolds praised as showcasing Delaney’s “beautiful, sharp, and sensitive writing.”
Reynolds noted that Delaney experienced the loss right after they wrapped filming “Deadpool 2.”
“If you stayed through the credits of Deadpool & Wolverine, you may have seen a tribute saying, ‘For Henry Delaney,'” Reynolds continued. “I regret not including a tribute to Henry at the end of DP2.”
This tribute comes as “Deadpool & Wolverine” raked in $211 million domestically in its opening weekend, achieving multiple records, including the highest opening weekend for an R-rated film. “If there’s a silver lining, even more people are seeing Henry’s name in the credits of Deadpool & Wolverine,” Reynolds remarked.
Reynolds also reflected on Delaney’s book, highlighting the author’s deep insights on dealing with loss.
“Rob offers a vivid understanding of unfathomable grief. His book presents a raw, heartfelt, loving, and sometimes hilarious (yes, truly HILARIOUS) take on sadness,” said the “If” star.
“I feel fortunate to know Rob. And I’m grateful to have friends who are willing to share their experiences to help others feel less isolated,” Reynolds shared.
In “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Delaney takes on the role of Peterpool, also known as Peter Wisdom, a friend and colleague of Reynolds’ Wade Wilson, who is a former member of the X-Force superhero team led by Deadpool and Cable, even though he has no superpowers or skills.
Henry was the third of Delaney’s four sons with his wife Leah, and he died after battling brain cancer.
Delaney expressed to YSL News in 2022 that he hoped his memoir would offer solace to parents and siblings who have faced similar grief. He also committed his book earnings to children’s hospices.
“I’ve gained a lot from support groups for bereaved parents,” he remarked at the time. “By sharing my experience, I hope to assist someone who is grieving, whether they lost their child three weeks ago or six months ago. I understand that having the book available is beneficial. While some aspects of sharing it are painful for me, I’m willing to endure that for those who need it.”
