What’s next for Simone Biles? Perhaps a Winter Olympics

MILWAUKEE — Simone Biles is considering yet another Olympic appearance.

This time, she’s thinking about the Winter Olympics.

The 27-year-old gymnastic star hasn’t made any firm plans regarding her athletics career or her potential participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Games. However, Biles has decided to take a break after her Gold Over America Tour – GOAT, a clever play on her nickname – concludes in November, allowing her to experience activities she’s never had the chance to enjoy before.

One of her new interests is cooking. Biles is set to open a restaurant named “Taste of Gold” at Houston Intercontinental Airport, and she and her husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens, are arranging trips together.

After enjoying lunch in Paris with skiing champion Mikaela Shiffrin, Biles expressed her desire to attend a Winter Olympics.

“It feels a bit intimidating because gymnastics has been my sole focus for the past 20 years. Honestly, it’s the only thing I’ve ever felt skilled at due to the countless hours I’ve invested,” Biles shared with YSL News Sports. “But it’s nice to branch out and explore new paths. That excites me because life is unpredictable, and this time to explore is truly a gift.”

She’s also relishing the opportunity to celebrate her past achievements.

Biles has previously mentioned the Rio Olympics, where she secured four gold medals and one bronze, felt like a whirlwind. That event marked her Olympic debut, and she was only 19 at the time. The Tokyo Olympics, however, were quite challenging. She faced strict COVID restrictions that prevented family and friends from attending, and she struggled with “the twisties,” which hindered her performance.

In contrast, the Paris Olympics allowed Biles to fully embrace the experience. With her family present in the audience, she added four more medals to her collection, three of which were gold. Even her husband was able to attend the team and all-around finals after getting permission from the Bears to take a few days off from training camp. Biles spent time in the Olympic village and attended various events after her gymnastics duties were complete.

Currently, her tour is drawing big crowds across the country, with adrenaline-filled fans eager to watch Biles and her fellow gymnasts perform live.

The tour features fellow Olympians Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey, both of whom competed alongside Biles in Tokyo and Paris. Also part of the cast are Josc Roberson and Mélanie de Jesus dos Santos, a French Olympian who trained with Biles and Chiles in Houston.

This time around, Biles has included male gymnasts in the show. Among them are Brody Malone, Frederick Richard, and Paul Juda, who were pivotal in helping the U.S. men’s team secure their first Olympic medal since 2008, alongside Tokyo Olympians Shane Wiskus and Yul Moldauer.

“This tour is electrifying. The energy is fantastic,” Biles remarked. “Many of us are still riding high from our Olympic success, so it feels genuinely different compared to 2021.”

In 2021, pandemic restrictions greatly affected both audience sizes and interactions with fans, but this year’s show focuses more on festive themes of mental health and self-confidence, drawing from Biles’ experiences in Tokyo.

While the messages about mental health remain crucial in the current tour – some harsh comments Biles received during Tokyo flash on screen during a performance – this year’s show also emphasizes a celebratory atmosphere. Each gymnast shares their journey and how they’ve overcome difficulties as part of the production.

“This show is a celebration, which was our main goal,” Biles expressed. “And it’s clear everyone is enjoying themselves.”

The two-hour performance is filled with upbeat music, vibrant dance routines, and dazzling light displays. Although the gymnastics involved isn’t as technically demanding as in competition, the audience at the Fiserv Forum on Saturday night was thrilled.

Fans erupted into cheers when they recognized Chiles’ floor routine music from Paris, chuckled at Wiskus executing a wolf turn on the balance beam, and marveled as the male gymnasts dazzled on the high bar and pommel horse.

This year, unlike in 2021, gymnasts were free to engage with fans when not performing. Canadian four-time Olympian Ellie Black high-fived fans in the front rows after her segment. The cast also took selfies and handed out autographs once the show concluded.

“Following this Olympic cycle, everyone is cherishing their accomplishments from Paris and celebrating as long as possible while looking forward to our next goals,” Biles shared.

As for what those goals might be, Biles isn’t sure yet. But she is eager to discover them.
